A/T problem

My mom has an A/T '00 Outback wagon and every once in a while it will slip out of gear while stopped. i.e. I will be sitting at a stop light and when I press the gas the car will just roll back and the engine will rev as if it were in neutral, however it is still in drive. We took it to the dealer but obviously they said that it didn't happen to them and they don't know what it is. Have any of you experienced similar problems or know what it may be.

My wife's 2000 OB has similar problem. We took it to a shop to adjust a "transmission engague cable" (I was told...) and the problem gone away for a month and it came back. Actually the problem that I have only happens when I first put in "D" and the car wouldn't go forward for a while, then it will engaged after a few revs. The second time I bought the car back to the mechanic, he told me the transmission won't last long, may be another 15 k miles or so, he simply just changed the transmission fluid, he said the transmission fluid smells strange... I am still debating if I should trade the car in or get the car to a specialist to check it up. I don't want to spend the money to get it fix only to find out the problem will come back later. For those who wondering, my wife's OB has 90k on it, so bringing it back to dealer will cost too much.
