Question Noob Question re: Turbo

Hi everyone,

First off all... just bought a WRX STi last night... Black with Chrome (EDIT:Silver) wheels. I wasn't sure about the body style... but the more I look at it... the more I like it. Not bashing the EVO (I originally wanted that car pretty bad), but the more I looked at it and sat in it... the less I liked it. I did not drive it... and I am sure I would love it if I had driven it, so don't bother flaming me... it is just my opinion on the looks and quality.

My previous car was a BMW 330Ci and I don't feel that I am losing too much in looks and luxury... but I am gaining a whole lot in power, control and handling (I had the 225HP with a 5 speed with sport pkg, but it left something to be desired).

Anyways, my question: having never owned a turbo is there anything I should be aware of? For example, I am assuming the 'poof' sound I hear during normal driving is the blow off valve? Is that correct. Kinda freaked me out the first few times... but my buddy had told me about BOVs so I deducted it must be that. Also should I let the turbo cool extra long before turning it off. One more thing, should I let the car warm up before using the turbo?

Thanks guys, sorry I am such a noob.

BTW - I am not a pretentious BMW owner (in my opinion), the one thing I hated about it was the image it had... I enjoyed the looks and driving it... but hated feeling like I was showing off... hmm I am sure the same feeling will be generated by my hood scoop and wing... but I think those are performance orientated... not just for looks.

For the poof.. Uhm.. what exactly are you talking about? Stock turbo cars do have a BOV but your friend may be talkin about a BOV that vents to the atmosphere, stock turbo cars recirculate and cant be heard all that much really. For the turbo timer there are differing opinions so I will give mine and everyone else can give theres.... I believe no matter what a turbo should be cooled down. If you run the hell out of it and just turn it off right away I feel like I am hurting something. Most people will say that 2 -3 minutes before you get to your destination.. limit the RPMs and you should be safe.

For the turbo timer... my opinion is that it's an obsolete concept. Newer turbos have all necessary cooling mechanisms built in. If not having a turbo timer was damaging ... I don't think they would give you a 5 year warranty on the turbo.

To answer your turbo warm up question:

YES! DO warm up the car before you flog it. The main reason is to warm up the oil. This is what you should do for any car, even if not turbocharged. Mind you the time it takes to warm up a car obviously depends heavily on geographic location and season. (Florida, Alaska etc.)
