Default Need recommendations for an STi audio system

This is my first post so if I am doing anything wrong please let me know. My dad is getting an 04 STi that will later become my little brother's car. Anyway the one we are getting has no radio or speakers and we don't want to waste money on the stock system. We are both clueless when it comes to car audio so we are gonna buy the parts and have a custom sound shop install them. What we need are recommendations for a head unit and speakers and a list of any parts or adapters that we'll need. Money is an issue so nothing extremely expensive. We are not looking to install a sub at this time but maybe later on. I'm partial to Infinity and Pioneer speakers and my little brother wants to be able to play MP3 CDs if thats at all possible. If you need any more info please let me know.

Thank You for taking time out of your busy day to read my post.

I think a TurboXs downpipe catless mid pipe and RFL muffler wound sound better and weigh less then any "audio" system you put in the car...

Radio, we don't need no stinkn' radio.

you can search this forum for stereo or audio, and also check the car audio forum for more info.

I'd say an Alpine 9811 or 9813 head unit with Infinity components up front and Infinity coaxials in the back would be nice for you, if you like the Infinity speakers.

If you are looking for a little cheaper head unit, they're out there too, but the 9813 has a lot of clean power, much more than the typical head unit.

have fun searching

check the audio forum, lots of info on head units there.

i am partial to infinity reference and polk EX coax speakers. they are really affordable (list for 100 but you can get them at a little more than half that) and sound great.

I have Focals driven by 9815 (I got 9815 cause it's blue display matched car better. ). You can notice these speakers would fly with an extra amp but if you do not need to be deaf in a next year sound is OK.

coaxials are where the tweeter and the woofer are one piece. The WRX is set up for separate woofer and tweeters, or you can use coaxials in the woofer spot.

Ok thx.

This is what I am eying so far:

Infinity BASSLINK (I know I said no sub but it would be nice)
Infinity Reference 6000cs (front, component)
Infinity Reference 5002i (back)
Alpine CDA-9813 (head)
Total Shipped ~$732
With out the sub its ~$500

I have no clue how much installation is gonna cost, hopefully not more than $200.

Would we need to get anything else?

I used the Sony MEX-1HD with its nice HD and ripping capiblity.

AS for speakers you DEFINITYLY want to use components. Using a single 6.5" speaker in the front doors sounds like a donkey farting underwater.

I'm looking for a <$200 headunit w/ MP3/CD/RADIO w/ a red display and I would prefer a silver face to match the interior. Any suggestions?

Nothing at all wrong with any of it. I tend to recommend high-end stuff, but its not for everyone.

Which models and how heavy are they?
And where to buy them the best?

Depends on what you want to do and which amp you pick. I would think that the exact weight of each model would be listed with the specifications on each manufacturer's website. Not really sure where to buy that stuff.....I get it directly from my installer.

I've always enjoyed Alpine... but whatever sounds good is the most important. With almost any head unit.. and a good AMP and speakers that sound goot to YOU... you will be happy.

You're going to need an "amp wiring kit" which is 8 gauge power wire, and a fuse, basically. The 9813 is a high powered head unit that gets wired directly to the battery on it's own fused line like an amplifier would. The installation might cover this, though, or they might cheap out here and just hook it up to an accessory lead, which is not desirable.

If you like infinity speakers, I think you have put a decent system together.

Have a good one.

This is the same setup I just ordered for my STi, sans the sub. I chose the 9813 for two main reasons. First, I didn't want to wrestle with installing a seperate amp just yet, and the Alpine has the best power rating out there. Plus, it also has 5v pre-outs for later upgrade. The second big spec for me was the S/N ratio of 105db. This is much better than other head units in the same price performance category. The Alpins aslo has all of the cooll gee-whiz Apline features, but those two things sold it in my book.

I chose the Infinity Reference speakers for their sweat price/perfomance ratio. I have a mortgage and two car payments now, so I can justify spending $500+ on the latest and greatest unobtainium seperates. Also there is definetly a point of diminishing returns when you get up there. Sure I can tell the difference if I really listen, but the car is an awful audio environment and most of the time I'm just looking for some clean moderately loud background music to enjoy me new ride to.

So, after all of that, I guess I'm saying that you should be more than happy with what you've picked.
