Default Slight chirping noise

Hi all.. When I drive with the AC on, sometimes I'd hear a squeak from the front of the car, sorta chirpy, for a quarter of a second, and the car loses power for a tiny bit. Only happens under acceleration.. could this be a belt that is slipping or something?

yeah it sounds to me like the belt is slipping a little when the compressor turns on. Should be easy enough to fix.

The clutch in the AC compressor could also be the culprit.

mike270 - How easy is the fix?

BAN SUVS - Is that a big job?

I'll just have to bring it by the dealer since its to do with belts.. should be covered under warranty?

It would be covered under the 36/36,000 basic warranty. The clutch replacement isn't a supremely difficult job as long as you have the right tools. If you don't have them, you would probably be better off having a shop or dealer do it. It is still more likely to be the belt however. Check the belt for cracks and adjust the tension properly before jumping to my conclusion.

I take it if its the belt that it is a consumable item and not covered under warranty?

I know very little about this A/C clutch so I probably will go by the dealer..

My car did the same thing. I had the Boone, NC Dealership (John Cook Subaru) check out a squealing or chirping noise I was experiencing at 3000 RPM's when my AC was on. I had a loose drive belt and was fixed in under 2 minutes for free.

I have a feeling that your chirping noise is the same as mine.

It wouldn't be the physical belt really. Odds are it would simply be an adjustment that would have to be made. I haven't had to do this so I am not sure on the exact procedure but maybe someone else can help out here. If all else fails that is why we have warranties.

Default Well well..

I brought it to Subaru of Calgary..

Dropped my car off and the guy said he'call me and let me know. He never did, so my buddy and I drove back before they closed to pick her up. Anyway, they replicated the sound and adjusted the A/C belt (without calling me first ) and I got charged $27.xx cuz he said it was a wear and tear item (??).

Does that sound right? ***..

That does sound right, and if it was $27 Canadian, you got a pretty damn good deal. No other shop would do it for less.

Man.. I guess u'r right.. yeah, that's Canadian.

Guess what I'm really pissed about is they said they'd call me if they found something but they didn't.. they just went ahead and fixed it..

Don't go to Subaru of Calgary if you don't have to..

Well, in order for them to look at it, you had to approve $XX in inspection... by just fixing it, they didn't have to charge for inspecting it and take the chance you wouldn't let them fix it, or charging for both. You are right about not calling though, they could have done that.

Hey, I lightly hosed down the engine and I immediatley got the chirping sound when the AC compressor cycles. This sound comes and goes, but started at just 20k, now I have 44k. The belt looks fine, but I'll check the sevice manuals to see if I have to replace the belt or adjust the tension. Im not sure about those "stop belt squeak" sprays. Why does the AC have to cycle when its not even on anyway?
