Default Hella 500 question

I am going to install a set of Hella 500 driving lights in place of the stock fogs and was wondering if I can still use the stock switch with some sort of splicing. I would prefer to stay away from another aftermarket switch on the dash, but if anyone has any ideas on this matter, that'd be great.

I have Hella FF1000s that I wired to come on with the hi-beams, but I also wired a stock switch as a master.

So the short answer is yes. Just put the switch in-line between the 12v supply and the Hella 500 relay coil. There should be a switch schematic here or at www.scoobymods.com

Good Luck!

yes. I used the fog light switch with an aftermarket wiring kit. Go to scoobymods.com (as soon as the site is back up and running) i uploaded a piture of the switch with where to hook up each wire.

I kept the stock wiring.. and spliced them to the Hella's

considering they both use the same wattage (55w) why not?
much less work too

the light will be brighter with the hella kit, you loose a lot of voltage with the stock wiring. with the hella kit, you get power directly from the battery, with better wiring too.

Same would be true with a headlight kit. When i built mine, i had over a voltage gain to the headlight with a double realy set.

I also just used the stock wiring. I even checked the voltages with the car off and with it running and there was no voltage loss at all. with the car off it was 11-13 volts.. and with it running it was 12-14 volts. Sounds about right to me. As for amperage I have no idea. Im sure running the bigger Hella wire would provide a bigger path but as for more voltage I cant imagine it would give too much more. I'll probably end up doing it sooner or later though it was just easiest to do now.

Chris, dont you remember we discused this awhil ago. here is the orginal thread and there is a voltave drop. I even won a buck about it its almost one volt, and that will make a difference in the brighness of the lights.

Haha.. that made for a good read.. I totally forgot about that thread. Guess I need to start bookmarking the threads I respond to. Guess when I get the time I will change out to the Hella Harness.

I know this is off topic.. and I may just make another thread but does anyone have any experience with the Catz Bi-Xenon 9007s?

Thanks,
Chris

Those of you that ran new wires, where did you get through the firewall. I poked around for awhile but came up with nothing. Also, what are some other options than the hella 500s as far as fitting in the stock location without major modifications? PIAA 80 XTs?

Thanks
Eric

There should be a rubber grommet around there somewhere... I used the hella harness and switch (which is totally ugly ) Please invest in some sort of lens protection (3M stoneguard or hella clear covers) so you don't crack a lens like me

Wire the lamps using the harness provided with the Hellas, then tap the relay into the stock wire. That way you get both; proper lights and the stock switch.
