Radar Detector Hardwiring
I just bought a hardwiring kit for my Escort Passport 8500 and I plan to install it on my '99 Legacy. Scoobymods has instructions for hardwiring a detector to an Impreza, but the diagrams look very different from my Legacy. Where's the best place to tap into power and ground? Has anyone done this?

I have a 2002 RS, and while it might not be the same in overall wiring, the wires I used might be the same between us. I used the switched power lead from the stereo, and grounded the kit to the chassis. I then ran the phone wire through the driver-side dash up along side the dash, and then ran it along the glass in front of the defroster vent. I then mounted the mute/LED portion to the dash next to the retractable cup holder. I would show pics of this, but the unit was stolen and I am now using an SR7 with the display where the clock used to be.

that sounds like what I want to do. I'm just not sure where the stereo power lead is.

Heres a pic of the area I'm working with. Can anyone point out where I could tap into power safely?

Look for 4 heavy gauge wires coming from the direction of the key cylinder. One is constant 12V, one is accessory, one is ignition, and one is starter. Use a meter to find the wire that is powered only when the key is in the RUN and START positions. This is your ignition wire--the one you want. By the way, in case you didn't know, wires sheathed in yellow are airbag wires. Stay away.

I found the 4 wires coming from the key cylinder. However, when I turn the car to ON or ACC and test the wires, I don't get any power indicated. However, I'm pretty sure these carry power because when I unplug the harness and turn the key, none of the electrical systems in the car work. My test light is supposedly good for 90v-600v. Am I missing something?

Bad ground, bad light, or blown fuse in the light. I would suggest picking up a multimeter. They can be had for less than $20 and are much safer than testlights becuase they don't draw current.
josh edit: err, if your light is for 90V-600V, you'll have a tough time lighting it up with a 12V battery. |

I have the Escort Passport 8500 too but I took a different approach. I purchased the hardwire and hardwired the detector to the right mapligth button. Yes I lost function to that light but it allows me to quickly turn off the detector and it was closest to any power / ground. Heres a pic of the finished product.
I know, you might think what if I leave it turned on! well it doesn't drain the battery of my car and kill it because I have left it on over 4 hours before and I also have gotten in the habbit of turning it off. -Matt |

that's a cool looking setup. my detector is still low on the windshield, making it pretty easy to spot, but at least I can leave it on complete dim at night and just use the remote display to see alerts.
