Default Bike Rack for sti

Hi

I am new to the forum so forgive me if this has been discussed (I couldn't find anything when I searched).

I have an 2004 sti and I need a bike rack for it. Don't want to put it on the roof and my trunk rack won't fit with the wing in place. Anyone have a solution? I saw a BDI licence plate mount rack on the weekend that was interesting but I don't know if they make one for the sti.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

PS I love the car, had it on the track in Spokane WA and it is FAST

Yah, I thought about a hitchmount but I don't like trailer hitches on performance cars. Would like to find a solution that doesn't require a hitch.

wrap it in bubble wrap and stick in back seat.

hitch mount would probably work best.

Haha, then we see someone install rails and racks on a STi.

our cars have the roof rails for a roof rack, that seems to be the best option, no changes to the car are required.

We have roof rack rails? I checked with the subaru parts dept and they only have factory racks for the wagon...and I checked on the yakima/thule site and they don't have any type of factory roof rack fittings for the STi... has anyone else found anything that would allow for a factory roof rack to be put on the STi?

Preferably one that can double as a ski rack too.

Check the www.subaru.co.uk web site.

Look in the accessories section. Not sure of the logic but the bike rack for the roof is located in the Towing section. They have ski racks etc and they all rely on the same quick release base bar system.

From my research this is for the sedan (i.e. does not require the rails that come with the wagon). The base bar system is a quick release that mounts into the rain channels. I asked on ScoobyNet to see if anyone knew part numbers etc. but got no response.

If anyone could find out from the UK some detail about these parts maybe we could find a dealership/vendor to bring this stuff to our shores.

I have the JDM imprezza accessory catalog, there are are over 15 different roof storage systems. Bike rack, ski rack, canoe rack, turtle top, top tray, etc....

Well, by eliminating the roof rack and hitch rack options, you're really limiting yourself if you want a secure system. Why don't you want a roof rack? I'd be proud to have one on a STi. As long as you don't leave it on all the time or, better yet, you put some 3M protective stripping under the footpad locations, your paint will be great. Plus, you'll have a badass looking car with a badass rack.

In the past, Subaru branded roof racks have been Yakima racks with Subaru on them. There is not a fit listed for Yakima yet for the '04 WRX, so the question is this: how much, if any, did the roofline change for 04? If it hasn't changed, you can use the fit from a 2003 WRX to find out what will work on your roof. I did that with my 2000 RS, which had the same roof as the '99 but was not listed on the fit list for Yakima when I got my rack.

If you get tired of the Subie folks at your local dealer not being helpful, find a good bike shop that carries Yakima or Thule and see what fit the 03. You should be able to tell if it will fit your car by holding the clips in place. Otherwise, get a hitch rack. You don't have many options outside of those for a quality rack.

I'm a big mtn. biking & road cycling (Trek equipped for years ) and both my wife & I are kayaking nuts.

We have kept Thule roof rack systems on our cars for a decade with great success as they make a 'fit kit' for every car on the road including the various Subies we've had through the years (notable exception was the SVX).

The Impreza/WRX/STi sedan options are currently the following:

* Thule Carrier Systems - General
Hitch mount and trunk mount options are listed but for those without a hitch and/or the stock STi wing these options may not be applicable.

* Thule Roof Mounted Rack Systems
This link details all of the various roof mounted options available including the 'Aero Foot' kit which fits the Impreza chassis. I use the exact same setup on my Legacy and it works great.

* Another option is Yakima, an equally good company as they use round rather than square load bars. Their equivalent mounting system is called the "Q Tower" and more information specific to the Impreza chassis can be found
here.

Hmm...my brother (who works at a bike shop) says that the yakima doesn't have a fitment for the 04 models...he got me the 03 model, so we'll see if that is the same.

I guess I was hoping that there would be something that yakima would have that would use the yakima landing pads, etc, etc...

bcsti, I'm the exact opposite of you... I have both a hitch and soon to have a roof rack as well. the hitch is pretty low key...i.e. you don't quite see it and it's not quite as obvious...the wing and the scoop are much more noticable.
