I posted this query in the Forester Forum, but thought I'd repeat it here to benefit (I hope) from more responses.
I've just put about 1400 miles on our new Forester XT 5-speed, and from the beginning it's run a bit cooler than I expected. No matter how hot the day or the kind of driving (city, hiway, etc.), AC on or off, the temp needle rises to just a smidgen over the first hash mark on the gauge -- the one that's about a third up from cold -- and stays there. Since this is well within the normal range I assume there's no problem, but this is considerably cooler than I've seen in all my other cars, and I'm just wondering if it's too cool. Would appreciate your thoughts.

That is precisely where my 02 sits. Right above the 1/3 mark I guess it would be.

I dig your Forrester. I want one for myself.
The coolant temp gauge (should be called an idiot gauge...) in your Forrester is every bit as crappy as every other Subaru. They're very non-linear. Ther're at the normal range (which varies between meters) around 155F and stay there until at least 200F. Above 200F, they climb rapidly. With your closed by 180F open by 190F t-stat and your fans coming on at 195F (with the AC off), you should always be between 180 and 195F. The only way to tell the actual temperature is to use a Subaru Select Monitor or an OBD2 scanner. |
