Question Is my Engine Dying???

Is my engine dying??? (that is what a friend said)

It's gotten to the point where even my GF says that your car sounds funny....and she hates cars and rarely notices anything...

background info...

2000 RS (auto) w/ 42k miles
mods: Ganzflow CAI
Suby Sports Lighten Pulleys
Greddy EVO Catback Exhaust

past 2 days....noticed my engine not sounding right...

usually when i drive it's usually a steady sound

like...

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRR

now it sounds like...

rr rr rr rr rr rr rr rr R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R R

not a steady beat....

plus everything sounds lower.....my exhaust is no longer loud unless a mash the pedal.....it is acting weird...???

Don't know if it is bad gas (89 octane) since we just had a blackout, but i was on half tank today and just filled it up w/ 93 octane....just to be safe....

my warranty has expired....

also could it be my plugs? (last time i changed them was @ 20k miles w/ NGK plugs)

How long have you had those mods on for?..If it hasn't been for long it sounds like the ECU adjusting to the new parts. And for that fact it just sounds/ looks from your post, just like a normal boxer idle....dunno...mabey someone else can enlighten you more?

Check your spark plug wires and coilpack.

22k miles may be too long for your copper plugs, as well. What does your tailpipe look like? Running rich?

A note on your gas comment. Higher octane is not better gas. Putting higher octane in there will actually make it harder to detonate and your engine will not burn it off as quickly or cleanly.
You car is spec'd for 87, 89 is fine, but don't go with 91 or higher.
I'm not going to hi-jack this whole thread, but a search will give you a ton of info on octane and gas quality and all the nitty gritty you could want.

Like the others, I'm gonna guess you need to check your plugs. And check your air filter and fuel filter while you are at it. Any of those things could cause the vague problem you are describing.
