Default Clutch Replaced Finally!

Hey everyone, I've been waiting a couple of weeks now for clutch parts for my 98 Outback. This is the second time that the clutch has been replaced, the first was under warranty at 30 K miles and now the car has been off warranty for nearly 20K miles.

Anyway the dealership that I bought the car from have serviced it for the most part since new. They offered to pay for parts while I paid for the labor. Seemed like a pretty good deal (but not fantastic!). It was still better than paying full price at an independent garage, so I went for it.

So the car went into the shop on Monday, in addition I got an oil change and a battery check (battery went dead one day while washing the car). They called me back to inform me that they had previously overlooked an alternator recall (apparently the battery was not being fiully recharged) so they replaced it, no charge! So now I have a new clutch, new alternator and new oil for around $400! I am a very happy camper!

I know, Subaru screwed up royally when this clutch design was implemented, and sure there was a recall that was overlooked, but the fact that they are still honoring warranty work after the warranty expired 20 K ago leaves alot to be said! Had the same kind of thing happen with an old Honda years ago where they replaced the plastic dash and door panels due to frost cracks. Again no charge! I know that this sure isn't a common practice with the domestic car manufacturers!

So the plan is to baby the car until the new Legacy Turbo is released next summer. I am intrigued by the manuamatic automatic with the steering wheel mounted shift buttons. I find that as I am getting older (and as Calgary's traffic problems seem to worsen and worsen) that the prospect of the next car having an automatic transmission just grows and grows!

Thats about it for now, just wanted to share my good fortune with you all!

Congrats!

Did you go with a stock clutch? How about the flywheel, replace that too?

I'm just "living" with my orig. stock with shutter 'till I save for a new one!

Sounds like you really were taken care of up there!

There really is a lot to be said about having your car regularly serviced by a dealer for the life of your ownership. Good will is a much easier "sell" both for SOA/SOC and the dealership and happens probably more than we're aware.

Glad your car is back to normal and that you can enjoy it again.

jalpas1966 ,

What has the dealer said about your car? Are they willing to offer you a replacement under the TSB?

Br, Dale

Nope, not even a "deal" to help me out.

That'd be Centaur on Mcleod Trail. Service guy's name is David.

I bought the car from them new in 1998. Don't know if this same treatment applies to "Outsiders"

Good Luck!
