Cool Price / Review of WRX.

Ok so I am driving back from the airport this morning, when this red car screeaaammms past me, OH yeah, then I remember I am in a hire car......
So after a some lights and beating up of the said hire car, I am behind this red Subaru....
So I start looking, flaired arches, WRX on the back "It can't be it does not get unvailed at the car show till today....."
So I get in front of him, there they were the big headlights, YES!!!!!!.
So after following for around 20 minutes I Figure out they are heading for Knockhill Race Track.
At that moment the car pulls over and indicates for me to pass him, "No mate, press only".
O well me thinks, but this guy has a WRX right there outside the gate....
"Do you mind if I look at it ?"
"Yeah, ok"

So look around for about 20 minutes, drooling all over it. When the guys says, "would you like a press pack ?"
"MMMM, let me think....."
So now I have all the details, I think life could not get any better.
WRONG
"Hey bud, now that the press has seen it, would you like to have a ride in it ?"
"MMMMMM......."
So in we go and there are about 20 cars wagons, WRX, saloons and various other 2K subaru cars.
I have to sign a insurance form saying that if I die it is not there fault....
So I am about to get into the passenger side thinking one of the reps will take me for a spin on the track....
"Here you go, It is the red key....."
"Are you sure "
"Yeah, I have checked with the boss, he said ok." ( boss being one of the head scoobie guys over from Japan...)
Ok so now I am in heaven, not only do I get to see one but DRIVE IT !!!!!

HOLLY MOTHER OF PEARL!!!!!!

That car is F"$!n fast!!!
It torque's all the way, none of this 3K then BOOM, it hands like a dream, they have done a lot to the handling, It really seems to know where you want to go and puts you there quickly.

As for the cosmetics, the lights are still fugly, but after my drive I got to talk to some of the scoobie guys and a guy from prodrive.
1) There is work being done on the lights, by Subaru, STI and Prodrive. ( One of the kits "WRC" will replace the lights with a intake light combo )
2) There is already a good aftermarket selection, and once STI and Prodrive are done there should be even more.
3) There will be a "P2", Prodrive have 3 WRX's right now and are doing the thang as I type.
4) There is a WRX Turbo and NA version, this could mean we only get the NA.

I will try to scan in the pics I have and also type up the press release.

Well, if it comes around for around $25K American and is as good as it sounds, I might have to take a look... I'm just afraid it will be discontinued before my current RS is all paid off in three or so years.

On the other hand there's that front end... but then I will not see that when I'm driving.

That's like $30k US right. I know that might not be our price, just trying to figure some things out.

It is a 215bhp version I drove and that is what goes on sale in November over here.
They did say the 6 speed 280 BHP version is being finalised at the STI labs, may even be at Nuerenburg (sp) ring in germany spring time .

If anyone wants specific data then give me a shout.

So will we be getting the 6 speed 280 version? I don't know if I should buy one next summer or wait to see what else comes out.

The guys from Japan hinted at around $25-28K for the WRX.
If so and from what the said about the aftermarket and the lights, and the drive ( had to get that in again... ) I would buy one in the spring, as a I believe the STI will not be finished and polished off till next year and maybe later....

What are the specs on the Turbo wagon? 5.9 0 to 60 thats quite fast for only 215 hp. I will be first in line for for a turbo wagon if it's as good as you say and under $28k!

As has been mentioned before on the list, the 5.9 time is "manufacturer's figures"
When I was there almost ever magazine in europe was along to see, I believe that the TV programs like Top gear and the likes get a hold of it tomorrow. They should be able to tell us "what it can really do".

As for the 280 6 speed I thibk it will be the spring / summer of 2002, before it even gets out in Japan, we then have to convince SOA to get it here......

That's what I wanted to hear!!!! Perhaps there's still hope for the front end.

The interior has also had the works, the aluminium actually looks really nice, the white dials have been replaced with black. the car I drove was silver and the seats were the "standard" non side air bag type. The version with the air bag is still nice but IMHO the standard look nice. The center console is almost the same, the ICE system has been redone, looked and sound nice, but most people will upgrade I think to get more power. There are new floor mats WRX style just like the 2.5 RS design, also the pedals,
MMMMMM, STI aluminium pedals and dead foot.

Also more room in the back, center arm rest.

Just hypotheticals:
UK Toyato Celica GTS 18,495 = $26,643 USD in UK, US price for GTS $21,455

UK WRX 21,995 = $30,872 USD in UK. Can we guess the US WRX will be about $26k?

Since you drove the 215hp version was it a right hand drive or left hand drive?

Also the WRC blue is the colour to get, the silver is nice and the red sucks.
They have also added a lot of colour coded parts.

The colours I saw:
Red
Silver
Dark Blue
Rally Blue
Dark Green.

UK price Teg Type R: 20.5k
US price: 24k (or what is it exactly?)

UK price current Imp Turbo: 21k
US price: 25k ????

These are similar cars: sportscars, small numbers, similar size, both made in Japan, etc.

Major envy doesn't even begin to explain it ;p

The news about the lights is interesting, and it is encouraging to hear it feels good seat-of-the-pants.

Notice that the turn signals are relocated to the bumper on the WRC car. If the kit is done that way it could be expensive. Maybe they will come up with a way of getting the turn signal into the cluster.

Here is some intersting information: I was having my RS serviced at my local scoobie shop here in Indiana and the Subaru rep happend to be there while I was waiting. I struck up a converstion with him and I brought up the WRX. He stated that Subaru is releasing it on a conditional basis. He said that if the WRX meets certain sales quotas, then Subaru will even release the dreaded 22B. He said that if sales are mediocre, they will continue to produce the WRX until 2003, and then replace it with a "NEWER" version. BUT-he believes that the WRX will be a huge success and if it is then we can expect to see a 22B on the road and in the showroom as early as the spring of 2002. He said that a fully loaded WRX(sedan) will range between 25K-28K, and he wasn't sure what the 22B would list for. His guess was between 32K-40K....Go Figue. I myself might pay that but you could buy a Porcshe Boxter for around that price so they are gonna have to market it BIG TIME to make it lucrative and worth-while.
