Default 2000 RS Security System Malfunction!

Hey all-

Hopefully this is the approriate forum. My 2000 2.5 RS (50,000 miles) is having an EXTREMELY weird occruance.

Each morning, and just in the morning, I drive to work. Upon arriving and stopping the car, the alarm begins to randomly turn on. Then, mid blarring, it turns off. Then it starts again. After about a minute of this it stops and acts normally. This is SO weird, because it only happens on my first trip in the morning. Sometimes i drive 40 miles to work, sometimes I will drive 10 miles to work at another building. Either way, it does it. Then, after the morning on and off session, it is good to go for the rest of the day. The process repeats itself the next morning.

Any clues at all? Or any other things you think I should test for? I know this sounds bizarre. I wish i could understand why it only does it on the first trip of the day. Coming home it doesnt do it. Running errands throughout the day or during the evening it doesnt do it. Just that 1 time in the morning. And, the distance/time of driving has no effect on it.

This is difficult because I don't know what a service technician would be able to do.

I also have a 2000 RS with a funky alarm =) I definately have a loose wire going to it as well...

Every now and then when the alarm is NOT armed...it will randomly go off for about 20-30 secs then stop. Sometimes after about 2 weeks of normal operation, I'll pull into a parking lot, pull the e-brake throw it into reverse, turn the car off...and it goes off immediately. I put the key back in, turn to "ON" then hit the reset button under the dash...then its normal for about 3 weeks on average. Sometimes when I go to arm the car or just get in...the door open light stays on. Thus the alarm only chirps once and doesn't fully arm. The only fix for this I have found is to stick my foot up under the dash and kick the alarm box until the door open light goes off. That seems to fix it for about 2-3 weeks as well. *shrug* its a cheap system. Check the plugs, kick it a few times and reset it.

so you really think its just a short? Im confused as hell about why it only does it on my trip to work in the morning (regardless of location).

I dunno...I have a short for sure. It only seems to show on hot days though. If you can reproduce it like that... I'd take it to your dealer and show them.

Anybody figure this out? Our '98 Forester is doing something like this. Luckily it happened to me first; I don't think I would've believed my wife... alarming chirping and locks cycling like I'm pushing the "arm" button over and over. I was dropping off our little old lady friend, where I usually leave the car running while I walk her up. If it happened any later I would have gotten locked out with the engine running!

I've left the battery disconnected for 1/2 hour, but it's still got problems. I think the "loose connection" theory sounds right, so I'll go try wiggling some wires with my hammer

I'd appreciate hearing any success stories.

I've tracked my problem down to heat...the alarm doesn't go nuts when its cold out...and it only goes nuts when I have the heat on full blast and on the floor, once it gets about 80-90 deg down there (car sitting at idle for a while after its been running) the alarm won't fully arm. It will beep once as if a door was open, but all doors will be closed. It's really weird. Solution is to just blow some cold air on it until the door open indicator on the dash goes out.

I just don't understand it.
