Default BLACK oil at change

I bought my car at 11,000k, put in a K&N air filter (it had clean dino in it at this time); at the 15000k service I took it to the dealer and brought my own Mobil 1 and K&N oil filter, which they put in. At 16300k I went on a 2500k road trip with my wife, baby, and all the related 'stuff' ie a bit of a load. The trip was from LA, Ca to Portland, Or. Mostly Interstate 5, which was a lot of flat driving at 90F+ and some mountain driving. On the way back it was even hotter. I was doing 80-90 most of the time with the air on.

The same night I returned, I went to the shop and had the oil changed. It was 3/4 to half way between the Full and Empty (but it only sat 10 minutes after running before I checked). When they drained the oil, it was black.

Now, do you think it could be because it was the first oil change with synthetic: that and the long trip cleaned some crap out of the engine?

Or maybe the K&N air isn't that great and doesn't filter like they say it does?

Any ideas?

The fact that the oil was black means absolutely nothing. The only real way to tell what shape the oil is in is to send it to a lab for analysis.
FWIW, synthetic oil is typically quite a bit darker than your standard dino oil as well.

If you're really worried take a sample and send it to Blackstone Labs after your next change.

I think I read here that oil will always change from it's "nice" initial color to dark black within a couple hundred miles.

It used to be that Quakerstate would come out golden EVERY time you changed it. The problem with that is it left the dirt and gunk in your motor. If your oil doesn't clean the motor out at all the grime and dirt will build up and you're gonna have major problems.

Basically if your oil doesn't get dirty, it's bad. It happens. It's part of the oil working the proper way. Also, Synthetic oil cleans a little better than dino. BTW the cleaning is a secondary factor to lubrication
