Question Brake light directly above muffler...?

I've been wondering about this recently... I've seen Imprezas, Lancer Evos, Skylines, etc. with little red rectangle brake lights directly above the muffler tip. Any insight?

I believe it is a fog light. You turn it on when you are driving in fog. Sometimes you will see Volvos or Mercedes with the left tail light brighter than the right one. It's the same thing, but integrated into the regular tail light cluster rather than being down on the bumper by itself.

AHHAhHA I thought it was some rice boy thing! I have only seen it on poorly done cars....never noticed it on any nice cars.
Is that some Euro thing or something?

Yep, fog light. I believe Susquehanna Motorsports carry them.

JF -

From where did you purchase that rear wing (in your first picture)? Is it a replica, or the "real things?"

Thanks!

It's a visibility thing so cars behind you can see you in the fog. The light is much brighter than the marker lights when your headlights are turned on. Brighter than a brake light and red doesn't cause glare in the fog. I've seen them on quite a few high end cars around here.

Our regular rear lights are not that bright, have you noticed (at least the STI rear clusters)? That's why I got the Hella rear fog in the first place. Some people said it unbalances the rear stance of my car, but I don't mind as I find symmetry boring.

It serves 2 purposes in my case. Better visibility from other cars and, for the motorists not knowing what it is, it keeps them at a better distance while on the freeway. When a small H-FWD gets stuck on my rear bumper, it is already 'warned' somehow when I hit the brakes to make them understand that, no, I'm not interrested in butt licking.

As for the wing, it is a genuine Prodrive wing that I got when SPD was the only aftermarket-alternative and that replicas had not reached the Subaru brand in NA. So, yes, it's the real thing.

Check Susquehanna Motorsports (as mentionned above) for good pricing. BTW, this is the exact same rear fog offered as an option on earlier Porsche 911 in the late 80's.

Hope this helps,

JF

PS With the fumes coming out of the muffler, it creates a nice red glow behind the car when idling.

My old Saab 9000 CD Turbo used to have then incorperated in the rear brake light cluster. They were smoke tinted when off to not show up but when turned on they were white like the reverse lights. I know I scared the !@#$ out of alot of people when I turned them on while at red lights. I persoanally liked to scare people who felt it was okay to stop about a foot off my bumper. Have they no clue about 'personal space'? Just before the light would change I'd drift back a lil' and then floor it when the light turned green. I doubt they ever figured out how I did it. I was afterall in 'reverse'
