Unhappy bummer gen IV headers gave me the CEL!

Well I was hoping just hoping, that I wouldnt get CEL from the headers...but...

I finally fixed my Data Link Connector (previous owners decided it was expendable)

and yup got the cat efficiency code. 10 to 1 its because of the headers, It only came on after I installed them....though my car does have 106,000 miles...

but what ever, Ill just clear it when it comes on. They sound to cool to take off.

oh I also have a stromung midpipe and scooby sport axle back.

so sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Jay

So, in simpler terms, what's it doing to throw a CEL?

Heat Transfer, the exhaust gas is much cooler because of the header design.

I have head wrap for them, just have to put it on.

So do you think once I get the exhaust put on that I am going to have a problem? ...I have the stock exhaust currently, other than the headers........

So the header causes more problem on 98?
I have a 01 and looking into getting a header, am I going to get into the same trouble?

I would caution against wrapping the headers, Once they've been wrapped Borla will no longer warranty them and they will retain enough heat to make the welds fail.

I would suggest some type of heat coating; Jet Hot, etc.

I kinda of like the CEL. Like when some asks you why you have a CEL on. Then you pretend to freak out and pull over and tell them they might have to walk home. Haha, good times.

I was told by Alex Borla at a recent trade show that he would replace any header wraped or not if it failed. I have also heard from board members that Borla will say anything but getting them to honor their words is another story.

I got the 0420 code a couple weeks after installing the header. I wrapped it with ThermoTec. No CEL since. I have had the wrap on for about 20K. I put a Random Tech gen2 cat pipe on a couple weeks ago. Still no CEL. FWIW, EGT's in the header collector go over 1300 degrees F at WOT. (2000 RS n/a))

hmm interesting veiws.

Im gonna rap them, the header wrap I have is removable...I think..

when, probably never cause im lazy, and a i have an obdii scan tool so clearing the code isnt hard.

I second the CEL on being fun.

Especially with girls in the car cause you can be 'witty' and get a laugh..

it never fails, no matter.

Q. 'Why is your check engine light on?

A. 'I dunno, I checked it and its still there'

'q laugther'

i've had my headers wrapped for almost 9k miles now and no ill affects, the idea was to keep from burning out the front A/F Sensor but a lot of good that did.

Question to those who have wrapped their borla's:

Did you notice any drop in foot well temps?

I know that after driving my car for long periods of time, it gets rather hot. My solution so far has been to take off my shoes, but I was looking for a less 'stinky' fix. I know all that heat can't be good for hp. I plan on doing a drivetrain swap down the road, so I am looking for inexpensive mods to improve my car for now.

I have no problem with my floor boards heating up the headers are pretty far away from the floor pan.

are you sure you dont have the heat directed at the floor vents?
