Unhappy Clunking Noise sounds like axle binding.

Ok...technical question for all you Subaru experts.

I have a 98 Outback Wagon with an Automatic Transmission (why I got automatic I am still confused about).

When I make a tight turn either backing up or pulling forward I get a strange clunking noise. Like something is binding. It is not a clicking like a CV shaft, so I don't think that is the problem. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be the rear differential? HELP!

Thanks in advance.

Could be several things and I'm sure folks here will have suggestions. One thing to try to eliminate some possibility of it being the clutch pack in the tailshaft of the AT would be to install the FWD fuse under the hood and see if the problem persists. Check your manual under 'temporary spare' . How many miles and are your tires good/the same all around?

Could also be bad motor/tranny mounts, exhaust loose, ?

Wink Binding & Clunking

My automatic 97 OB was doing this until I changed the transmission fluid and the rear differential fluid. Do the tramission first. Undo the drain plug and replace the 4-5 quarts [it holds 10] Drive it for a couple of weeks and do it again. Mine was smooth witin a couple of blocks. Good Luck

I have a 98 OB with the AT and had that exact problem. Changing transmission fluid and filter (yes, it has one) and resetting the ECU fixed the problem nicely.
