Post Pinging! Octane questions...

Ping Ping Ping, Boom!
anyone have any approximate figures on how long/many/loud etc.. it takes for this to happen?
I was also wondering how badly each ping is to the piston(ej25 specifically)..
and what octane boost is best and how much octane is too much octane?
(Is too much bad?)

Pings usually happen too fast to "count" if I understand your post correctly. It is sometimes hard to hear unless it is severe ping. It is easier to duplicate if you lug the engine. If you have never heard it before I'll describe the sound: almost like loose marbles in a container being shaken. Your car should not need octane boost if it is stock and you are using the recommended fuel grade. The beauty of newer technology and todays cars is that the ECU should detect ping and retard ignition timing controlling the ping. The last octane boost I used was in my Pontiac Trans Am with a 70 400 Ram-Air III that had 10.5:1 compression ratio. It was Moroso Octane Booster and it worked pretty good when I would drag race the car at Bandimere near Denver.

What do you consider the recommended octane rating? The owners manual says use 87 octane, but with a 10:1 ratio I would suggest a higher octane. I read somewhere that we're supposed to use 91 AKI.

we'll I'm definitaly not stock..
(turbo kit 7-8 psi right now)
and I tried NOS octane boost it helped actually...
I just need to know how long was it before any one lost a piston to pinging (preferably related to an ej25, but any advice will help)

umm... from my own experiance the NOS if used repeadtly will eat your cats away ( i am assuming you still have A cat or 2. )

in my experiance i found the race formula to work the best, followed by the purple stuff ( dunno if you get it there...) a BIG BIG bottle good for up to 60 gallons IIRC..i was using a bottle a tank or a bottle every 2 tanks in the summer and i still use a bottle of NOS race every fill up that takes a big slice of money.. or when lazy i run 100 octane.
