My moms friend just totalled her 2001 Legacy Wagon (not Outback.) What kinda parts could I take from it for my 97 Impreza 2.2? All parts are free so anything goes.

MAP sensor engine fold down seat (not outback? i thought outback meant wagon? i dunno) front seats trunk light? steering wheel... basically, strip the whole darn thing down and sell the parts ![]() you would learn a lot in the process. |

The people in the vehicle were fine. They didn't even have to stop by the hospital. When I first saw the car, it didn't look rolled. I was amazed at how well it did in the roll over. Suspension arms and struts are no good, and the body panels are scratched and dented, but the overall structural integrity of the shell is great. From the look of things (minus the alignment) the damn thing looks drivable.
I would sell some of the parts, but I think I am gonna use EVERYTHING I possibly can. I have kinda found myself a new project. So sorry, at this time, nothing is for sale. Although some parts may be at a later date when I have time to tear it down and figure out what I can and can't use. I will post it in the classifieds. -Andy |

Down boy! Hate to tell you, but you may not be able to take anything off the car at all... If the insurance company decides to total out the car, the wreck becomes their property and they auction it off as salvage. If you start taking parts off it, they can get rather testy. Heck, if it's in as good condition as you say, they may not total it at all. To be a total loss, the cost to repair the damage usually has to exceed 80% of fair market value for the car (the actual percentage may differ depending on the insurance company). My '99 Outback Sport had the entire front end smashed in, but it was just barely over the limit for repair cost. So hang back and let your mom's friend deal with her insurance company before you start scavenging the car for parts

Why does everyone have these misconceptions about the outback being the only subaru wagon?
Outback = -Subaru Legacy Wagon plus: *taller struts *taller tires *spacers in body to keep camber settings correct (the spacers do NOT add lift, they are there to adjust the camber because of the taller struts and tires) *body kit and badging *a bit more plating (headers and drivetrain protection) This is from personal observation of my own outback vs GTs and other subaru wagons, plus some information I have come across on this board. Subaru makes several different wagons, off the top of my head: Legacy L Wagon Legacy Outback Legacy GT Glad everyone was ok in the rollover. |

Well you are right Poseidon. Although the owner wanted me to have the car (they know I am a Subaru freak) State Farm is going to auction it. The insurance person said I could have it for $1700, but I don't have that kinda money.
And yes, it is totalled, all of the suspension parts are damaged (the rear view of the wheels looks like this \---/and the shell, if you take a few steps back looks kinda lop-sided..and the driver seat is about 5 inches higher than the passenger seat...kinda funny looking. Maybe I will get some pix. -Andy |

RallyImprezive,
you'll be surprised... try to negotiate with the insurance company. they might give it to you for a little less or do a monthly payment thing, I don't know. anything is possible, plus, worst to worst, they'll just say no. talk to the manager if possible. good thing that no one got hurt. now I feel even safer in a Subaru... ![]() |

Get the car for $1700, with the 2.5l motor and tranny, you'd be able to build a cool L/RS hybrid. |

RallyImprezive,
Don't give up hope quite yet... If you have a halfway decent job, you can take out a signature loan with someplace like MBNA. Yes, the interest rates are scary, but you can sell pieces off the Legacy and the Impreza to help offset the payments. Make a counter offer to the insurance agent. They may go for it. |

GET THAT EJ25. Do what you have to do to buy / beg / cajole it from the insurance co.
I'd run-not-walk away from everything else. The suspension and wheels and even tires (who wants RE92's anyway?) are automatically suspect in any crash, especially a rollover. But the motor should be good. If the hubs or rims didn't damage them, the brakes may be worth looking at, too. $1700 is a bargain for the engine alone, never mind the trans. Good luck. Fuzz |
