Default Wiring harness for stock fog lights in 98 OBS

Hi guys,

just picked up some stock fog lights (used) for my 98 OBS.

Looking inside the bumper, I can't see any connectors to power the lights. I unwrapped the wiring harness that goes to the headlights/turn signals, but I don't see any hidden connectors in there either.

I would think that subaru would use the same harness and just tape up the unused fog connectors for cars w/o the fog light option.

Is this not the case? Do I need to do all my own custom wiring?

Apparently among 1st gen. Imprezas (as well as 2d gen. Legacies), only the cars with factory installed fog lamps had the necessary wiring. Add-on fog light kits sold by Subaru include an extra harness, actually two harnesses.

what did that harness connect to? Did you have to splice into the existing harness?

Will there be any wiring going back to my fog light switch, or do I need to splice or run wire there too?

The add-on fog lamp kit includes what can be called a power harness, and a control harness for the switch and relays. There actually are some tap-in connectors, but only for low-current circuits. Other connections to the existing wiring use a pass-through pair of plugs in one place, and adding extra pins to a couple of other plugs at the fuse box.

I'll bet your car has most of the wiring already installed. Mine did, but it's MY00, so your mileage may vary. I know my friends MY99 OBS was set up exactly the same as mine.

Look behind your left headlight, just in front of the battery. Do you have a two pole connector hanging out of the wiring harness going to the headlight? If you have that connector, you are likely in good shape.

You will likely have a socket to plug in a relay, and a socket that connects to an OEM switch. All you have to build it a harness that connects your two fog lights to that connector behind the headlight.

If your car has this connector, email me for instructions on getting it all working.
