I just saw one of these driving in front of me, so I caught up to it, and it has got to be the ugliest piece of shiit I have ever seen. It looks like a big ol' lunchbox on wheels rollin' down the street. I cannot believe someone actually paid money for that abomination.

Makes the isuzu vehicross look right cute, doesn't it?
I can't believe they're building it either. There's a first drive report on For those that have never seen this beast: ![]() [This message has been edited by ColinL (edited July 25, 2000).] |

You don't like the vehicross? I love it. I was kind of considering it for a winter/next car. It is so stylish. Maybe I see it that way because I am going to school to design cars and am drawn to any design that is fresh. I don't know. I didn't know those Pontiacs were released yet.

Okay, I just looked at that report and saw the back of the Aztek. It does look like a garbage truck from the back. I understand why you don't like it now. I like the front though.

The vehicross is ... um, not my style. But I wouldn't make fun of someone driving it, in fact I'd be jealous of their recaro seats. But the aztek... oh boy.

Looks like someone merged the CRX with the hideous BMW SMVs (soccer mom vehicles).
Disgusting. I'm going to go throw up now. |

You know what's even scarier? Remember our friends at GM buying 20% of FHI??
From a road test I heard: The Aztec uses an viscous coupling center differential to distribute power front and rear.. That's right folks, 90% chance that the aztec is using the same technology that our AWD uses. It's more like our cars than you think! the horror!!! ahahahahahaha! |

Got to ride in a VehiCross. Nice, but I don't know if it's worth the $30K asking price.
That Aztek is pretty nasty looking.. NO MORE SUVs please. |

Teehee, a 210HP front wheel drive dump truck.
But it will have it's market niche. Remember the Buick Reatta ? ~shudder~ [This message has been edited by Matt (edited July 25, 2000).] |

I think wanting to be fresh and original is one of the common pitfalls of stylists. Aesthetically pleasing shopuld take precendece over originality. If someone build a Modern E-type Jag (and I mean an exact copy with modern mechanicals) I, and I believe many other enthusiasts would be all over it.
Design is just a combination of lines and curves and IMHO the best ones are past. The art school metality is to break your own ground even if the end results are repulsive. (walk around SoHO galleries for a first hand experience) Ever wonder why the teachers are teaching and not designing? Nissan hasn't built anything as beautiful as the original 240z. The Corvette's zenith was between 63 and 67. The 996 is a 911 that has been heated to the point of melting. The 66 Mustang fastback is the best of the breed. The supra has always been a styling dissappointment. The Modena is beautiful, but then again PininFarina is not afraid to pay tribute to their successful past designs ('64 250LM). Design is truly where the Italians show the comaparative advantage. The English aren't bad at all either. Bauhaus belongs in the outhouse. Germans do beer! I still don't get what people see in the Skyline (besides the power) It is an over the top prepubescent boys fantasy car. My fantasy was a blown hemi Cuda. Just my, as usual, opiniated $.02 Tim |

Criminy, ease up on rippin' the Aztek, will ya guys?!
It's quirky and unconventional...in a Citroen sort of way. In fact, it's so un-cool; that it's like, cool, man. C'mon, it's not as if our beloved Subaru hasn't ever marketed some bizarre avant garde models over the years! I just think that we Subie-lovers should welcome more daring and adventurous designs. Particularly from boring middle-of-the-road General Motors. Hey, maybe they will bring back the Corvair! |

I can only think of two reasons for the Aztek's existance:
1. It was a joke by the design staff and everybody forgot to tell management. 2. It's all a plot to make the Monte Carlo appear slightly less ugly. (Good luck!) |

Everyone make sure and read that link subapooh provided. That's funny stuff, especially the section on bad design.
