Default which oil filter for MY04 wrx non-STi?

OK, I've read conflicting advice from previous threads. When I did my first oil change, the dealer sold me an 060, and now for my second oil change the dealer said the correct filter is the 080. Which is the correct oil filter to use for a 2004 wrx? Can someone who knows for sure (e.g., Subie Gal) tell me. No one seems to know what's going on.

Thanks,

Joe

The old parts CD (Bell and Howell) said to use the AA060 filter. The 04 WRXs have been coming with AA060's. The Forester XT and STi have been coming with AA080's and we've been using those on them. Now, Bell and Howell is saying all 04+ models get the AA080. Yet the AA060 fits and works fine on the XT and the STi. Basically, either filter is fine.

As per the August 2003 TECH TIPS:

All MY03 and MY04 turbocharged vehicles should use the smaller 080 filters.

All N/A 4cylinders should still use 060 filters.

The 080 filter has a 68mm diameter, 2 7/16" tall.
The 060 filter has an 80mm diameter, 2 3/4" tall.

What I can't figure out is, if all MY03 and MY04 turbocharged vehicles need a small filter, why doesn't a MY02 WRX need a smaller filter?

The reason given for this is that, on turbocharged vehicles, the 060 filter might cause overheating of the oil because of it's proximity to the downpipe... (Those are Subaru's words, not mine. The filter sits nestled in the manifold & isn't even close to the downpipe, and I'm not sure why Subaru said what they said.)

I called 1.800.SUBARU3, but they were stumped.

Seriously, though, if someone will volunteer to permanently host it on the web, I can supply a copy (it's 1,030,899 bytes). And, no, I can't email it to you.

My 04 WRX, which I took delivery in late July 2003, came with the smaller 080 filter. The filter sits pretty close to the exhaust manifold and front exhaust pipe. I had an 80mm filter that was sold to me by my local Subaru dealership, but after reading this thread I think i will return it and get the 080 filter. I wonder if Subaru's concern regarding overheating is valid? Is MY02-03 oil filter in the same location?

Here are pics of the filter that came with my car:

Yes. Same filter location, same oil cooler above the filter, same exhaust manifolds. For MY02-MY04 WRX and MY04STi - all the same.
