Default Hi all, new to the forum, STi question(thinking of getting one)

Hi all, i have been reading this forum learning what i can, and have looked at and driven an STi, and i am impressed. I am thinking of getting one.

Looks like beset prices can be had at Van Bortel, anyone tried using this to negotiate with their local dealer? It is a doable drive for me (from boston area).

Also, I currently drive a 2001 S4, anyone else own/used to own one of these, and switch to STi? I think i have seen one poster who has.
The question on this is how was your insurance affected? I am a step 12 and currently pay 1500 a year for the s4.

TIA

I dont know how if this will help at all, but I traded my 350z which I payed 1980 per year for insurance. The STI cost 1140 for the exact same coverage.

Most states don't use the step system as seen in MA.

Capitolm94,

This is what you do...

Step 1. - Contact Patrice Everest at Van Bortel Subaru and tell her 'Henry from VA' referred you.
Patrice will tell you straight where you might stand toward securing an STi from them this year or next. Currently word on the street though is that they are booked solid into next summer. Don't worry, just get your name on the list and consider it to be your back-up.

Step 2. - Contact Tim Sullivan of Planet Subaru (781-826-4444) and tell him that 'Henry from VA & I-Club' referred you.
Tim gets a few STi's per month and is located near you in Hanover, MA about 30-45 minutes from Boston depending on traffic. Let him know that you are on the Van Bortel list (but don't mention I sent you to them first!) and that you were hoping to secure an STi sooner than later. He may have stock and if so he'll deal if you act like you know what you are doing. This is your primary option.

There is zero negoitiation with Van Bortel as the car is dirt cheap with them so don't waste your breath & time. Tim at Planet Subaru is a good guy but he's a business man too. They are getting cars loaded with crap (radios, alarms, wheel locks, etc.) from SoNE and as such the rates are higher than VB. But they can and will remove junk if you ask them too which will reduce your out the door price. He wil negotiate if you come correct and are serious. I suggest you setup an appt. to go meet him in person.

Now don't go calling either of these people unless/untill you are a serious buyer. If you aren't prepared to go get a car this month then don't call them untill you are in that position otherwise you are wasting there time as well as your own. Not to mention dinging my rep.
They both have all manner of folks bugging them about wanting cars and later discovering they have no money or have two cars they need to trade/sell or are upside down in a '03 WRX, etc.

I assure you both dealer reps are above board and will take care of you well. VB's reputation is known widely on this board.
I've sent both my father in law ('04 Legacy GT) and a team mate of mine ('04 WRX Wagon) to Patrice and they both reported back to me as being super pleased. I worked with Tim myself directly and was 24 hrs. from buying my STi from him, then patrice called and said that my car had arrived the previous day (Sunday) in Boston and would be at her facility in 24 hrs. (it arrived 8 hrs. later!). So I ended up buying from Patrice but made a friend with Tim.

There are just a few dealers out there that aren't dirt bags, vultures, crows or other carrion meat eating birds of prey. Patrice of Van Bortel and Tim of Planet Subaru are those very few.

I hope this info helps.
Let me know how things go for you...

Best of luck,

- Henry aka 'Janq'

P.S.
That insurance step program is a bogus Mass. thing that as mentioned most states don't have. My old insurance agent contact from NoHo has retired so I don't have a contact for you n that area. But its always good to check with AAA, Progressive and my carrier Nationwide to get an idea toward rates specific to your own situation.

Default Hello from a fellow S4 owner in the same position

I'm currently selling my S4 to purchase an STI. I'm sure, performance wise, I will NOT regret it one bit. My favorite car I've owned was my 1998 Integra Type R and I miss it dearly. I'm looking to get the same raw, almost race-ready setup and the STI is it, times 3! You will see just from browsing the forum that there are many former and present ITR owners that are buying STIs- it is a perfect step in the right direction for most of us.

P.S. My
Audiworld
handle is
S4TTime ;-)

awesome, thanks alot. That is some excellent info. My local dealer has 3 in stock, not sold, so maybe i can get them to deal. However, i am not ready to buy yet for maybe a month or two, so i will be sure to wait until then to talk to these people. I know how annoying it must be for a dealer to do this for a non serious buyer, so i wont do that to them. Thanks again.
