I cleaned and re-oiled the AMSoil filter on my car last night. Upon starting the car this morning, it will not idle. It starts up, revs itself to 2000 or so, then idles down to the 1000 range, coughs and dies.
I can rev the snot out of it, lift off to idle. Dies. I'm re-setting the ECU right now. Any other ideas? TIA, - Eric {Edit: I removed the 'Urgent' from the subject... I've taken the *gasp!* minivan in to work. }

It could be two things:
1. One of the vaccum hoses is not on properly. 2. You didn't let the oil dry long enough and it coted your MAF causing it to get a bad reading. Check all the hoses connected to the intake...make sure they are on tight. If that doesn't help....take the air filter off and clean the MAF filament w/ some alcohol and a q-tip. |

I don't think a q-tip can harm it...maybe if you jab it full force. You just want to gently wipe it.
Have you ever seen a MAF...looks pretty sturdy. It could break if you drop it on the ground. I think the MAP could be a little more fragile...I have never seen one. |

what else did you remove.
the 98 mafs are very strong and hardly ever go bad, Make sure you hooked back up the large diameter Idle Air Controler hose to the intake tubing. that will cause the car to fall flat on its face. Also quick test, is to unplug the MAF and see if the car runs, If it does it will only go to around 3500 RPM, but you will know the MAF is damaged. Jay |

Thanks, Maciek. Once I got back home, I found the loose hose w/in a couple minutes. The thing connects on the bottom of the intake, so, from above, it doesn't appear that anything is wrong. In my 'I'm leaving for work and what the hell is wrong with my car???' frenzy, I didn't notice or think to notice the hose. I feel like such a putz. Thanks to one and all. - Eric '98 2.5 GT Wagon - Pics |

McDade hit the nail on the head..
I had this same problem with the Forester.. I went to take off the cover to check the air filter. And I did not know that Idle Air Controler hose came off.. Went to start the car.. Sounded normal until like 3 Seconds later the car started shaking and Died.. But Of course I was at the Lanudymat.. So I could not see.. (Bad me mode on) I reved the car thinking maybe it was bad gas.. The Car Farted once So by that time I left... Car stalled again making turns.. So I droped it from N into D.. WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES!!! I did get it on the High way at around 70MPH The AT Oil light was flashing that I thew a code (I think it should of been CEL) Anyway I got home and later found out what the problem was.. |
