Unhappy I just got a raise, and I'm not happy..

As you know, I was on the verge of being laid-off. The company I worked for had to do some small house cleaning and I wasnt asked to leave as I thought I was. Today at a meeting with my supervisor, we were told taht our department would get a raise...

A 22.5% RAISE!

For some reason I am not happy about this. They keep me, a guy who is leaving in less than 70 Days, and get rid of quality personel. Then they give my whole department a huge increase. I honestly want to walk into my bosses office and ask him to take my raise back and let me go. I'm so confused right now. This just doesnt sit well with me.

you know, you could write a virus that would rip them off big time.

EDIT: um, yeah, that's an Office Space quote, not an encouragement to rip off your employer. DO NOT write a virus that will rip off your employer. that would be BAD. and WRONG. it would be a combination of BAD and WRONG. like, BADONG. you should stand for the opposite of BADONG. be... GNODAB. yes.

It seems like that sorta defeats the purpose of letting the others go. Unless they were just all slackers. But your comment leads me to believe they were'nt.

He knows I'm leaving and never coming back. We also have discussed the idea that he can let me go at anytime and I will have no problem with it. While everyone is dacing around in their cubicles, I sit here bewildered. This is ****ing bull****....I don't know what to think right now.

I'm going into the Air Force and they have known this for months. I even told my boss a month ago that he can lay me off if necessary and I wont have a problem with it. But it never happened, and now I am making more money.

Whoop dee doo.

My raise yesterday was for less than 2% because of budget constraints. We just got bought and we're losing three or four clients in a few months.

After a raise like yours, I might be convinced to stick around a little longer.

Wow, you somehow found a way to whine about something 100% positive. I hate to think what will happen when you are in the military ...

to be honest, as much as i think Remy's a whiny bitch , i see his point.

sucks that they lay off quality personnel and give raises that they know they don't have to honor for long because the employee's leaving. that's effective management, i guess.

Mike, shove it up your ass alright...

Maybe for you, more money = more happiness, but for me it doesnt. I didnt like seeing my friends and co-workers let go only to see my pockets stuffed with more money. It's not fair to them in this job market....

I'll see your 2% and lower you 2% to 0%, which was my raise for the year. Yet, I'm not bothered.

Remy, I see where you're coming from. I'm finding that, no matter where I might work in the future, the level of common sense applied by management will be less than that of my dog when he comes in out of the rain. If you're upset enough, leave now. Just don't burn bridges behind you.

You should write to Ann Landers. You know, do something constructive.

Ugh, I hate how companies go about cutting costs. We're going through a restructuring right now. Maybe I can get laid off from the same job twice in 10 months

If you feel so awful, give the extra money to the people who were let go.

I'm really looking forward to your posts after you go into the military.

I don't think the raise would really concerns you because you're leaving anyways rite? So your company pays you more, you leave, and if your company don't pay you more, you leave. What's bothering you? You leave for good anyways rite? It's not like the raise would makes you to have a second through on staying on the job or not.

I was in a situation really similar to this, where a bunch of my friends got "let go" but I got to stay, and got a larger than normal increase, full knowing that I was planning on leaving in 6 months. I guess they thought they could convince me to stay, but it backfired on them cause not only did I leave but we had like a huge exodus and now they cant get enough people to work for them, they even had to grovel back to a few of my friends and try to rehire them for more money (they all said no), the place sucks now, but the funny thing was when the execs saw the turnover rate the management there was "let go" as well.

You're over-reacting. If they laid people off, I'm sure a 22% raise for you doesn't come anywhere near to accounting for the money they just saved from laying people off.

Did you ever think this was a choice they made to keep you happy? Maybe they have some stuff that still needs to be done. Your boss likes you, but knows you are leaving soon. If they lay you off, they are responsible for a portion of your unemployment(it's not all government money, employers pay into it as well). Why pay you to sit on your butt, if they can keep you on for a little while, and let you leave of your own accord, without having to pay unemployment? Also, maybe the raise is easily affordable now, and they did it to keep you happy, as they know you'd probably be sad that some co-workers were let go. They are trying to avoid having you just quit unexpectedly as a show of support for your friends.

Trust me, businesses know what they are doing with these decisions. They are made for the benefit of the company, but not usually with the intent of being malicious.
