looking for a softer sport seat for chronic lower back pain. something that is supportive yet forgiving enough to not kill me on a 3 hour ride to Chicago.

Your options are dependent on how much you are willing to spend first of all.

Well $2500-3000 is about what you would spend for a PAIR of top of the line seats... $1000-1500 would be for a nice pair like sparco evo's, sti seats or something of that nature thats not too expensive yet not bottom of the line... Bottom of the line, like sparco sprints for example can be had for $365 each with brackets, but they arent too comfy. I havent sat in alot of seats myself, but the biggest decision seems to be whether you want a reclinable or non-reclinable seat, after you figure out how much you are willing to spend...
But its also a good idea to check around and see if any local shops in your area have seats on display that you can sit in, or if anyone in your local area would let you sit in some aftermarket seats in their car at a meet or somewhere so you can try them out.
As far as seat comfort, the few that ive sat in have all been more comfy than stock impreza seats, especially the JDM STI seats (ive been in version 3 and version 6 STI seats, both were great) but by far the most comfy seat was the one Gary Sheehan has in his race-car WRX Top of the line sparco seat I think, but man it was bolstered everwhere and I just fit in that sucker like a glove

Kosta,

You are a crazy, crazy man. I guess I never considered my seat comfortable. It is a MOMO NASCAR seat. Why they decided to call it "NASCAR" I have no idea. It fits well, but I think the 2mm of seat padding would start to feel a little thin pretty quickly in a non-racing situation.

Recaro has done a lot with seats. Maybe check out some of their orthopedic options.

All of those seats you mentioned, Kostamojen, are sports seats or racing seats...they are all too stiff. We are not on the same page here.
I will check out the ortho recaro seats. Recaro always made a quality seat. I did searches but could find very little on back posture or ortho related automotive seats. (there were quite a few seat covers that heat and vibrate and are not what Im looking for)
thanks anyway.

For chronic lower back pain, some Forester or Legacy leather might do it.

What are pros/cons to a reclining seat. i've sat in the Torino's.. And i've been very intested in a set of Evo's, or possibly a Rev. I have no access to these seats however. I never change the position of my recline, but i'm intersted in what these seats are 'defaulted' to as far as a state of recline/upright goes.

For chronic lower back pain you need more lumbar support right? Almost all those seats i mentioned (exept the cheap ones and including the STI seats) have more lumbar support (gary's seat had support from EVERY direction!). A seat with soft lumbar support will just increase chronic back problems. Its really something you have to go sit in alot of different seats to see if it works or not... I wouldnt buy something like this from word of mouth

Kosta -
it is not only support, but firmness as well. Sitting in a well supported seat for an hour may keep me in the seat, but I wont be able to move after I get out of it. I need something to help cushion the bumps more than be supportive from every angle.
youre right though - the only way is to actually sit in the darn thing, find out for myself.

You could even try the stock WRX seats. Nicer than the USDM STi as far as support, and some RS owners prefer them over other aftermarket stuff. Very easy to test out, too

I have sat and driven in both the stock WRX US seats and RS seats.
they are allright, but not what I am looking for in terms of punishment on my spine. I need something more forgiving.
