Exclamation 350hp,20psi,turbo RS at Anaheim show!

I went to the Anaheim International car show in hopes of seeing the new WRX,and instead I found a Flatline motorsports modded 2.5RS,and these two guys hanging out, answering questions about this turbo'd RS.
Well-seems I am one degree from the infamous "Byron" that I cannot wait to meet. (If his car is half the rumours-I am doubly ready to see it!)

I say this because these guys are in the know with Byron, and trade parts and whatnot with him.

Enough of all that-here are the specs on the car at the show that they built:

1. 22B shortblock.

2. 2.5 heads.

3. What seemed to be a fairly large turbo. Not Grand National large, but bigger than I see on stock turbo 4 cyl cars.

4.Dual stage wastegate. He had these 2 anodized blue cylinders, one at 10psi,and the 2nd at 20psi. The first one being good til' 3000 RPM,then the other after that. And they are running the 2.5 computer, and they said teh MAF sensor compensates for all this.I dont know if they are using piggybacks or not,but he had more than a few extra gizmos on the dash.

5. 3" exhaust.

6. Gutted interior, with full cage that ties in all over, including the shock towers, with gusseting.

7. No sunroof-just a hole where it was.

8. Some wicked-looking coilovers that he had on display, that were to go on the car soon. These things were big,and the shafts were giant, too. The body I think are around 2.75" in dia',and the shaft was like 2.25" . Those were neat. I think he said that the coilovers were adjustable to about 4" over stock, and all the way down til' the tires about rub.

9. The front apron was banged up,and they said that is because they chased quads at Pismo beach, and hammered up some hills, when they were running over 20psi on the 2.5 motor. (that motor blew, hence the 22B bottom end)

10. They are supposed to be rallying the car soon in the SCCA series.

11. They said that they have beaten the following with the old motor (the brand new 22B has around 600 miles on it)
Viper GTS to 60,but I guess towards the top end,the Vipers storm back up on them.
Brand new Porsche Turbo to 100.

12. They said they knew Byron, wanted to know how I knew of him,and Flatline. I told them we got our Imp' at Sube of Irvine, and I heard of Byron on this board-he hasnt heard of I-RS.com,but likes M-List.

They said that they have destroyed numerous trannys, and that Byron's motor is being pulled apart for an internal inspection, that he may or may not have some damage there. He wanted the location to remain exclusive, and said that the car is covered so no one may see it even if they knew where.

And another thing-these guys I guess are in together on this business of selling these turbo kits. They wont install them, but said that the kits utilize your stock exhaust,so everything bolts on,and that the turbo would sooner or later burn out the stock cat. You have to remove the Cruise conrol module at the firewall to left of the intake. I apologise-but I believe that the company is called CTM. I understand that Byron has a company called B-SPEC. That stands for Byron-Subaru Performance E***** Company-Sorry-but all this comes from my memory on Sat early eve. Anyhow-some people on this forum know Byron-so if you are interested, get in touch with Byron, because he knows these guys.

Sorry for the long post, but I found all this quite fun,and would like to hear all your responses, whatever they may be!

hmmmm... Those struts they had on display, were they light blue in color? They sound suspiciously like DMS 50MM's.

I've talked to Byron before, and have gotten a quote from him for a drivetrain, but am still waiting for an itemized price list.

Question

Two questions: Have those guys ran that car at the track? If so, what were their 1/4 mile times (Trap speed and all). Thanks!

Socal, that isn't directed to you but to whomever is in the know. And please don't tell me that 1/4 mile times aren't everything and blah, blah, blah. I just want to know for personal reference.

The Viper GTS and Porsche story seem interesting. I just saw a new Porsche at Atco yesterday running in the 12's. I'll try to post a video of it in this thread so some can see if I can find one. To beat a new Porsche with their 'old' motor is awesome. I am really wondering what the new motor is doing (Not capable of).

DB,Yes I do think they were blue. I did see the box,but I dont remember what I read on them.

Kevin,-you know me,I do like timeslips, and have received the same flack you have. I want to see 1/4 mile times, and track times, with lap times compared to other vehicles, and yes,I do also know that neither means everything, but is a good starting point for comparison.

I do have an interesting comment that was mentioned about Byron's car. When I told this guy that I have heard that a lot of people are finding it hard to believe that Byron's car is that fast,he said (This guy actually said 9's!!!!) If anyone wants to put up their pink slip-the offer stands. If you think you have a faster car-let's go!

Wow! I dont know trap speed,Kevin, but this claim is faster than the previous one of 10s,that I saw here before. In fact-I think that the thread I read, said (rhymes )that Byron got kicked off the track for not having all the safety mods required for 10sec passes. I didnt question the guys facts, just listened.

I just want to see a cage, because I can't believe any track lets him run that fast without a cage.

SteveS

Where's the BS flag when you need it? I'm not saying that Byron's car is not fast, just that he's not that fast. All I need is proof -- I'm with Kevin on this one.

Weren't we all still waiting to see these dyno runs that he was supposed to have done last year when he was 580hp? That's right he wouldn't say where he even did these dyno runs. Of course if he had you could always find out from the company if the numbers were true. We've been down this road before and let's not go through it again. 580hp on a stock tranny isn't possible. By his own accounts Byron with little money in development has a car that is faster then JUN. If you think his claims are accurate then email some of the prominent companies out there and ask them if they've ever even heard of him let alone believe him. I can already tell you that JUN will laugh at you if you tell them.

stream-of-consciousness_mode:Jeff Hill personally told me he was having trouble keeping his motor together when he was running over 28psi. Blowing metal head gaskets after a couple of 1/4 mile trips. His car ran like **** for normal, everyday driving because of how modded it was to handle all that boost. Jeff constantly worked on his car. Constantly. Finally he had to take it off the road because it just wasn't reliable enough for a daily driver. But it's damn fast, in the low 10's. Wow.

BPM full dog gears is the tranny he is running. Now the better question is what did he run in Vegas if he did run like he said.
BTW his e-mail IIRC is WRX1199@aol.com just please don't bash as it get's old and that's why he stays away and just lurks the M-List.

OK,guys-I first want to say I am truly honored to get a post that has this many replies this quick.

Thanks!

Trey-as far as the pinkslip thing goes, keep in mind that this comment wasnt made by Byron himself, but by a friend of his.

These two guys displaying the 350hp car as titled in this post are friends of his,and this came up when I spoke of the speculation of the power of Byron's car.The response,I believe, was to anyone with a faster Impreza on this board,as this was where the doubt came from.

However,if you have a faster Impreza than Byron, lets talk about that too!

Steve S: that is what I have heard. That Byron got kicked off a track, for not having the required safety gear for the run. Thus, no timeslip.

WOP-I dont know if it's true or not. But he has a circle of people singing his praises. And FWIW,with enough $$ and time,I think an Imp can go 9's,especially if a front drive Civic can.

Mprezya-It was supposed to be a secret, but yes, that is where Byron's car is now, with suspected bottom end/internal damage, but uncertain. I guess the car is covered, because too many people are showing up to look the car over.

And there was a thread on here saying that Byron has blown around 5 trannys.

These guys I ran into claim to be running Byrons's 2nd gear, and they have blown 3 trannys.

Byron said he was running the car at the import race offs this past weekend in Las Vegas for time when I spoke with him at SEMA. Did anyone go there and see it. I truely believe he has a @10s Impreza and that 9's could be a possibility but of course we all need proof. I doubt many of you have met him and even Joel changed his ways after he was "shown the light". But I have yet to hear anything about his runs in Vegas which I take if what Flatline is saying is correct he may have had some engine damage if the engine is out of the car or he didn't go (which doesn't make sense). Believe me there are people in the industry like Ed and Ron Bergenholtz who know Byron very well and are figuring the car capable of @10sec passes if not maybe 9's. But till proof arises spider fans keep posted.
Rich

BTW SteveS he has a cage in the car as well as a full interior and they say the weight is @2400lbs for the car. (used to be a 1.8 base shell)

i'm confused. if they're running a 22b engine, why would they want the 2.5L heads. wouldn't they want to stick with the DOHC on the 22b?
