Post Colin McRea has nothing on me!!!!

Well it seems that old Colin is not the only one that can fall down canyons. Today on Latigo canyon here in socal..I took a 67 foot leap off a cliff. It seems I hit a rather large rock that caused my right tire to start to slide. Well I tried to keep it straight, but it was no use. I careened off and rolled it three times while falling 67 feet down the face of the cliff and landed on the roof! My car is GONE. Not a single 4 inch square peice that is not dented. I do hope they total it because their is no way it can be repaired correctly.

I said it in the socal forum, that car saved my life. Folks it is strong.

I already miss it. And I dread the insurance nightmare that is impending. But I have to take my lumps. Rock or no rock its my fault. I just dont see any way I could have avoided it. Bad luck I suppose.

I should have been a better driver. I dont think I am bad driver, but I should have been better.

So folks be careful. No matter how experienced you are, this can happen to you as well. You just cant expect EVERYTHING.

be careful and have fun.

stephen

Stephen, are you ok? I hope you are, becuase 67' drop is a boo-boo maker in my books. Metal can be fixed (or totaled in your case), so no worries. You'll get a new toy.

Cheers.

Steve, glad to hear you're OK.

I can't believe you lost the Scooby! To think I was one of the last people to see it.

Did you get any pictures? I bet they will make a good post on the board here as a reminder to us all that anything can happen.

Again, glad you're OK, I hope the Insurance claim works out OK.

Richard.

Yeah I was just thinking the same thing. I mean, you expect the car to be totalled (which if it was 67' worth of rolling & tumbling, I'm positive they will), but how are you physically? I imagine quite a bit stirred up. Well good luck with everything... I hope your insurance company doesn't blink an eye beyond saying "ok give him another one", though of course there is always that under their breath to the secretary "ok, now bump up his rate!".

Good luck.

Uh oh... I was really hoping that your post in the so cal forum was a joke on all of us canyon runners... guess not.

Man, I'm REALLY glad that you are allright and weren't hurt. Wow, I can picture you're car in my mind right now - down to the silver speedlines and all... can even see the image in my rear as we were going through the canyons...

well, glad you're allright bro. You still owe me a ride by the way - guess I'll settle for a spin in your new WRX...

Thanks guys for the kind words. But I am afraid that my car will heal long before my ego will. Does anybody have SOA email address? Is is on their web sight? I want to thank them for building a great car!

I am very sore this morning, but I guess the Big Guy up above was looking after me because I dont see any permanent damage (aside from the car that is)

One more thing.. people... WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT! YES I AM YELLING! IT CAN AND WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Glad to hear you're ok! You could probably get featured in the SOA Drive magazine if you submitted a story & crash photos. They usually have a segment on people who've survived big crashes in their cars.

Question

Holly crap!

One question though, was this during a rally event with a rollcage in the car or were you just "having fun" in stock Impreza WITHOUT a rollcage??

If it was the stock street version than I am even more Imprezzed!

Wow, SCRAPPYDO, that is pretty amazing!

OK, so you are saying I actually have a chance of surviving if I roll into a ditch from a 70mph drift on some of the winter rallies I do!?

Ouch. Thank the one above you survived. People can go in much more menial ways...

Don't suppose the rims survived?

I'd at least pull off that Pink badge as a momento. Tell the grandkids how you launched a car into a valley, came out unscathed.

What do you think when you are falling... well I cant say what everybody thinks. But as I went over for the first time I thought oh man this could be bad. And I cant believe I am doing this. Not me, no way I could have done something this dumb. This is what you see on TV and go, 'oh man he's dead!'

When you are rolling you think, 'I hope it stops'. You don't know how deep the canyon is when you are tumbling. You also don't have any idea as to what you are going through. You cant keep up with your attitude as it corresponds to the ground. The sound is awful, truly awful. The sound of glass breaking and the sound of metal crunching is not nice. You begin to wonder if the roof will hold.

When I came to a stop I was hanging up side down in the car still strapped into my seat belt (again buckle up, it saves lives). A reality check happens rather quick and I turned the radio off, and then turned off the engine (that's right, it was still purring!). Then I tried to release myself from the belt. Well I had to pull myself up with the wheel to take the load off the belt. So 'plop' down I went. Now I am sitting on my knees on the roof of my car and I distinctly remember saying, 'OH my god I just F$#@ up my car. S#$T! Well then it was time to get it together. The first thing that occurs to you is how the hell do you get out of a car upside down. I could not open the doors due to the thick brush that was blocking them. So I remembered that the passenger door glass is a breakaway type. So I kicked out my driver window. At this point you are thinking, 'any fuel leaking' and 'this could slide further down the cliff'. At this point I crawled through the window and began to pull myself out of the car.

I emerged from the car in the middle of what must have been the worst damn thorn bush in the entire state of California. Thorns that were at least 1 inch long and very sharp… so after I crawled up on the car, I was in the talk to myself mode. Helps keep me calm and work through things. Well I said 'Great, I fall down a damn cliff, and into a damn thorn bush! Wonderful'…kick me when I am down. Its at times like this that you wonder who you pissed off in a later life. Then I simply sat down on my floor board and took a few minutes to pull out my cell phone while I admired my lovely Stromung Exhaust, still hot 'ouch'. Well I decided to climb up the cliff before I make my call so I can get some better reception. I knew a Lexus saw me superman off the edge so I assumed they would stop for no other reason than morbid curiosity. I was more than 2/3 the way up and a guy came down and met me to see if I was okay. I was not counting the scratches on my arms and neck from the bush from hell.

You try to relive it in your mind to see what you could do differently. The truth is it does not matter. The secret is never panic. Stay focused on the moment at hand and think your way through every situation. Looking back I don't think I did to badly. Was it scary, you bet'cha. But I think that the impending insurance nightmare will make things much worse. Have I learned from this. Yes, I learned to take things more slowly when I don't know the road by heart! But I learned to buy another subaru because they have earned my respect.

SCRAPPYDO.. sorry to bore you guys.. but you asked.

Bored??

I was at the edge of my seat reading through it!!

Man, many a times I have ran the same/similar scenario through my head. I can't even count the number of times I was in situations that were about 1 mm away from what happened to you. Reading your encounter made all the more real!

I hope everything goes OK with your insurance, and that you will soon be back on the roads again, but maybe a little slower this time...at least when you are around some 70 ft cliffs.

Scrappy,
bore us?!?! man i can't speak for every one but i was transfixed by your telling of the event! Thank God you are ok...i can't beleive(but am incredibly thankful) that you walked (or even lived)outta there. your time was not up dude and gald to see that.
last winter i had a freaky simular experience. i was driving too fast(stupid) in a snow storm. went over a bridge that was iced over(it even had that sign: bridge will freeze before road)-or something like that(even more stupid).suddenly, i realized turning the steering wheel had no effect what so ever on the car! i was just sliding across this 1/2 mi section of bridge. i tried turning the wheel and nothing happened. and you're right you just kinda sit there and go "this aint right...what the?!?", & "this is the kinda thing i've seen on TV and thought he's not gonna make it..". then the back of my car started to come around the front, and when i slid(really!) past the end of the bridge, suddenly my tires griped the non frozen road, and all hell broke loose. i swerved to and fro for awhile as i tried to controll the car(it felt like a salmon from hell- not the almost peaceful: "hey i'm sliding... that's weird" from before.
i eventually slid off the road into the snowy divider backwards which slowed my car to an eventual stop(very lucky). i actually rode over a thin tree(like one inch in diameter) that i slammed to the ground. the thin tree held my front tires up alittle off the ground so i couldn't go anywhere. what reminded me of my experience was how you described the after affect. talking to yourself, realizing that the engine was still on...and totally purring...and going: "well i guess i'm alive...lets try to acces the situation here." a cop came by and called a tow.i waited for the tow truck to pull me off the little tree. i was gonna drive home but the driver said it was probably better to wait for a flatbed just in case.
i rode away with the flatbed driver angrily scolding me about jerks like me thinking just b/c i have AWD i can go as fast as i want, and how 4 wheels slipping on ice is the same as two slipping on ice. i just sat there very somber and thought to myself..well the guy has a point.
now i'm fully aware of my own mortality and take more care in my driving. quite the eye-opener...
once again glad to here you're ok,
-Lou
PS- sorry about the insanely long post
