Unhappy Peugeot Wins WRC Manfcts Title.... :(

Even tho Tommi won... he DIDN'T win... read on.....

Monday, 13th November 2000

Tommi Makinen has been excluded due to the turbo on his car not
complying with FIA homolgations. The FIA Technical delegate examined
the turbo after the rally and found it did not comply with homologation
rules. An FIA representative this morning said it appeared that
the turbo's non-compliance was a genuine mistake rather than deliberate.

The change in the rally results, and the extra points for Peugeot,
mena that it has now won the Manufacturers Championship (even if
Ford equalled Peugeot's Championship points by coming first and second
in the Rally of Great Britain - which it theoretically could -
Peugeot would win the Championship on a countback).

The Telstra Rally Australia results also puts Gronholm in a nearly
unbeatable position to clinch the Drivers championship to ensure a
double triumph for Peugeot.

Of course I wanted Subaru to win, but Peugeot has obviously built a really devestating car.

You can see in the footage that it doesn't only handle well, but it seems more powerful than the other WRCs.

I wouldn't mind a little 106 GTi as a runabout

I used to drive a 306, Peugeot cars in the last 4 or 5 years have all been great (I think it's since they introduced what they call ICD (Integrated Chassis Design) into their production.

The 106, 206, 306 and 406 are all great handling cars.

The Peugeots are quick but "squirrely" due to the short wheelbase.

If Gronholm DNF's GB (or finishes outside the points) and Burns wins then he get the Driver's title.

Let's all go to Subie Gal's shrine o' Burnsy and say a little prayer for Prodrive and Richard.

Thumbs up

The 206 is a fine car and Groenholm is a damn good driver. He didn't smash his car into rocks and the car didn't break down all the time like the subarus. So give him credit, he earned the title(if he gets it).
But whats about all this team order *****?
If you're the fastest, you win, or do I miss something?

That Pug ain't even an AWD car to begine with! it's like Hyundai Tiburons!!! That's cheating IMHO. So is Ford Focus. Do they even have an AWD turbo Focus?!

Sorry Gambut, but....

Focus on Cosworth (7/25/2000)
AutoWeek

Ford will take on new versions of the Subaru Impreza WRX and Mitsu-bishi Lancer Evo with a hot 310-horsepower Focus developed with Cosworth Racing. Sadly, like the WRX and Evo, the Cosworth Focus will not be for the U.S. market.

Due in European showrooms by late 2001, the Cosworth draws on Ford's World Rally Championship Focus, with a reworked chassis and all-wheel drive. Power comes from a turbocharged version of the 16-valve 2.0-liter four-cylinder Zetec engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Now that's funny! Five years ago, the major manufacturers (especially Ford, with their aging Escort Cosworth) were whining about having to produce Group A homologation specials. Now Ford is building an AWD, turbo Focus on their own. What a joke.

Group A rally was the best thing that ever happened to the global auto industry. It forced them to design and build production cars optimized for going extremely fast in harsh real world conditions.

Regarding the Pug, how well do you think the new, bigger Impreza will fare against the tiny, nimble Peugeot? Notice that for WRC competetion, Hyundai based their effort on a Accent chassis, not the Tiburon. The new priority in rally is SMALL, and I fear Subaru will be left behind with their bigger-in-every-dimension sedan.

I hat to say but I fear he might be right. Those Pugs flew on the ashfault rounds of the WRC.

Hopefully Burnsie can pull one out at GB. The would be sweet for him to steal the title in the last round on home turf.

Cool

Ford have pulled the plug on an AWD Focus, as the re-engineering of the rear end required would push the price to about £35k. They cannot compete in that sector of the market when the Scoob is £21k and the Evo 6 is £31k, so it's no go I'm afraid. Shame, it would have been fantastic!

Gambit, what difference does it make if there is no AWD production model? The rules don't require it, and these cars are so far removed from what you can buy it makes no difference anyhow. The WRX you will get probably only shares door handles with the rally version!

Cheating is breaking the rules, and they certainly are not doing that.

Well done Peugeot, and well done Marcus Gronholm (it will be a miracle if he doesn't claim the title), they both have been the class of the field this year.

Don't mind me. I was just rambling. All it takes for Gronholm to clinch the title is a point score. Burns on the other hand must get 1st no matter what.

That sucks!

Regardless, CONGRATULATIONS to Peugeot!

They have done a great job! The cars ran great, the drivers were awesom, and they won fair and square.

...even though there were some rumors about the Peugeot team cheating in some form in San Remo... I don't really care! They did not win because of one event. They won because the drivers and the cars did consistently well over the 14 events!

This new Impreza better pan out for Subaru next year, otherwise we will be seeing a repeat of this year, and not just with Peugeot.

well, better the frogs than the fords

i agree with gambit that it is neat that we can buy a fairly cheap car that at least has power going to the same wheels as the rally car instead of just another FWD econobox like what most WRC cars are based on.

A miracle more like! The only person to win it three times in a row in the modern era (1960 onwards) is Timo Makkinen, and he was a class act. Old carrott top will have his work cut out to beat this field.

The only thing in his favour is the fact that nobody else has anything to drive for, as Peugeot has the manufacturers crown and Gronholm 'only' has to finish sixth or better.

I'm dissapointed that Subaru didn't win it the year I bought my car, but I agree that I'd rather be beat by the pug then the ford.

Congratulations to Peugeot and to Gronholm. He's the only driver who's been a "nice guy" throughout the season. He certainly deserves it. Good work.

So, if I hear the dull thud of a body crashing through the undergrowth, I can assume it's you trying to walk with your toes crossed?

I suppose you're getting jolly excited by now. Not long until you fly to a more civilised world, where WRC is a reality Bring your waders, 'cos it still hasn't stopped raining!
