Exclamation Auto-x = fun with 20mm saw bar!!!!!

HOlllllllly Shi*! Today kicked ass. Along with my fellow Subaru buddies, there was an auto-x and its the last one of the season. So being that its the last one, and I know these tires on are their last leg.... LEt PLAY!
This was my first time driving with a 20mm bar( its normally set on 18) so I did not know how to control it. WEll, my first run, I left off the gas...and there goes the back end!! YEAHHHH!! THat was crazy fun, but a little to much for me because it was my first time. So my 2nd time, I come into a turn to fast and do what every dummy does...break! Now I know why they say not to break in a turn! Lost control of the car!! I did my first 180 and I loved every second of it!! Lucky for me we also got it on tape! (thanks Lou )
Neways, by the end of the day I learned a lot. I learned how to control that swing out and use it for good.. now I just go into a turn (fast ! ) and let go of the gas in the middle...once the car is pointing where its supposed to be, slam on the gas and blow through the gate...I cant tell you how much fun it was Neways, just want to say thanks for Everyone for showing up today..it was lots o fun

Cool

wassup all,
Keith man, those tail happy turns had the flag station guys(where i was filming from) running for cones...as well as running in panic...too cool!
Adam and Craig also did a nice job of getting those guy's blood flowing and blood pressure rising that chilly day. I was so extremely jealous!
i think you can hear on the tape those guys saying: "are your friends trying to play up to the camera or something?" too funny!

Cool

I can't remember who said it, maybe Pat Richards, that the best way to drive the Impreza is the TLS method:
Turn, Lift, Stomp

Ain't the 20mm bar great!

Thumbs up

Sound like fun

You can actually get that same action with a stock swaybar (just not as easily and as nicely as the 21mm). You actually have to come in almost too hot, whip the wheel then immediately come off the throttle completely, then stomp it back down. This work very well for slalom and the car just dances around the cones.

Just for my curiosity, you failed to mention what other suspension mods you might have. I currently have kyb agx set at 2f/7r suspended with tein s-tech soft springs with a 20mm whiteline rear sway on RE92's. I noticed quite the difference when I went from stock to 20mm, but no tail out action. I can feel the back end get a little loose with full throttle around a very tight corner (especially at 22mm) but throttle lift does not force the tail to change ends. Is my car just really setup wierd/good/bad, am I predicting the car too well, not taking corners hard enough at high enough speeds (doubt it, I've autocrossed ), or what? Even at 22mm the car wouldn't trade ends, though it did have some lift-throttle rotation and felt REALLY solid.

You're not trying hard enough.

Keith has the Whiteline rear bar & endlinks... nothing more. I also managed to spin mine with a 20mm bar & nothing more. It's pretty impossible now with the Ground Control setup now though. Either that or I've figured out how to drive it.

Maybe lowering the car far enough prevents this? My suspension takes the car pretty low (~1.5" but basically sits on the tires). I am sure the GC setup is more than capable of doing the same. I don't think that I have taken my car so low that the suspension isn't working properly because my car just about keeps up with all the other autox imprezas with better tires and various suspension setups. It could also be the way I drive because I brake before the corner (straight-line braking) and then gas through all corners (no full throttle lift for me, only partial but usually not at all). Who knows?

I barely lowered my car... maybe about .75" below stock?

I forgot to mention that when I rally-crossed at the Vegas meet I felt a lot more of the lift-throttle oversteer, but I, again, did not swap ends. Four wheel drifts were a piece of cake to start up though, I will give it that much.

I also have the anti-lift kit and Bridgestone re730's (nicely worn! ) I think u cant get ur car to spin probably due to ur kybs. If u had the joys of stock suspension and a nice 20mm bar on that car...WEEEEE Yeah I remember Garrick(ridinlow) losing it when we auto-x in nassau col! that was pretty cool
Also its ur driving style. THats is normaly how I drive...slow in fast out, but I find it to be more fun (only on auto-x) to go fast as hell in, let off the throttle, and slam on the gas as soon as the car is pointed in the right direction. I cant tell you what fun it is when you feel like you have control of your car like that. Now I know what they mean from "point and shoot" cars, because that is exactly what is like. Come into the turn to fast...know that the next gate is on the opposite side, turn in hard...left off the gas..wait till your car is facing the next gate, hit the gas..a little correcting steer...and ur in! PLus you look like you know what your doing and all the girls want to come home with you
auto-x rox!
