Default Does AccessECU Stage 2 help prevent backfiring?

I am running a TurboXS Stealthback (with hi-flow cat) + Prodrive axle-back, TurboXS uppipe, stock ECU and no boost controllers. Occasionally, after a hearty first gear run followed by a quick shift to 2nd, you will get a small backfire (followed closely by a P0420 ). I guess it is running richer than really necessary because the ECU doesn't fully adjust for the new exhaust piping properly?

Although I'm really enjoying the new power, I feel like my car has lost some of the factory smoothness, everything is a bit harsher now, and it'd be sweet if a good ECU tune could fix that up for me. I'm strongly thinking I want to get an AccessECU stage 2 (based on price/reputation, though not totally hot on the idea of shipping my ECU across country.. ), anyone have a similar setup and find that it helped smooth out the power flow and cut down on the backfiring?

thanks,
hys

Nice. Were you getting occasional backfiring before?

your back fireing is more to do with the free flowing exhaust than with ecu tuning. I just had an axel back and was getting backfireing before I got accessecu. put your cats back on and I'd bet your back fire problem will get a lot better.

Thumbs up

Thanks all. I had the Prodrive installed a month and a half before putting on the turboback, never had any backfire. Obviously removing the cats is the cause, guess I could put them back and less backfire.. also less acceleration.. hmm.. NOT! Anyhow I think I am learning how to drive it to prevent the backfire more now anyhow, I'll definitely be going with a Stage 2 flash too.

Do you have any cats? I have noticed from tuning many Subaru's that if the car has no CATS at all it will backfire. There is a force from the pistons firing and the turbo forcing air creates a pressurized system. When you let off the gas the pressurized system rapidly becomes a vacuum and therefore you get a pop. With a cat, it will break up that pressure system, as it is very hard for a pressurized system to flow through a CAT. Also there are of course unburnt fossil fuels that with the pressurized system a little oxygen, right after the exhuast and you get a little explosion out the tail pipe.
