Default best oil filter wrench

What is the best oil filter wrench?

I've bought the different adjustable types from Pennzoil and they can't seem to tighten the oil filter. I also have the one that exactly clamps directly to the filter without adjusting. There is a slight oil leak.

I buy my oil filter from my local subaru dealer for an '02 wrx.

Hand tighten the filter. Filter wrench should be used to loosen only.

Exactly. Tighting the filter with a wrench can cause the seal to leak. The rubber is supposed to be able to expand and contract as temperature changes.

Thx for the replies.

Originally, I hand tightened the oil filter and it also leaked. That was when I started buying different types of wrenches.

Either something is wrong with the mounting surface for the oil filter or the leak is from somewhere else. Others dont have this problem, and youve tried different filters so it has to be something else.

Make sure the gasket seating surface on the filter mounting boss is clean and lube the gasket on the filter with motor oil. Some filters do have to be tightened with a wrench, however it's generally specified on the filter or the box it comes in. Usually the ones that need to be that tight are on diesel trucks which have LARGE filters. Lilse makes a pretty good filter wrench.

If you're having trouble getting a good hand grip on the filter, take a strip of medium sandpaper in your hand and wrap it around the filter -- that should stop any grip slipping problems.

Can we get back to the question at hand? I'm looking for a filter wrench too, and am wondering if anyone has any experiences with one that will fit through a skidplate? Mine has a hole in it for removing the filter, but I can never get the filter to turn, so I always have to take the skidplate off to get more leverage.

I picked up a 4-in-1 filter "socket" from Wal-Mart. It's orange, has 2 parts, and works with a socket wrench (with entension bar). I found it with the other filter wrenches. I'm not sure how much clearance you need around the filter with the skidplate, but the socket is maybe an inch wider in diameter than the filter.
My only gripe about this one is it has to be PERFECTLY centered and angled, or else it slips like a peel.

I could take a pic of it this weekend if needed.

Go to Pep Boys or Walmart and get a filter socket that attaches to your socket wrench. Works beautifully.
