Default Initial hesitation on cold engine acceleration

For the past 6 months my wife's 98 Legacy GT wagon auto has developed a huge stumble/hesitiation upon initial acceleration just as she puts the car into drive after backing out of the driveway. It fells really weird. You slid the car into drive and push the gas and the car accelerates very slowly and then it takes off fairly quickly (because you push down on the gas a lot to get going). After about 30 seconds, the problem is disappeared. Anyone have any clues? It's not a major issue, but the car hasn't always done this.

Thanks.

Dave

My Legacy has done the same thing from day one.
cold starting I assume is the first drive after a long period of it "not" running.

What I did to fix my problem was to install the grounding kit for the motor. You can look around anywhere on this board for purchase or making your own. If you make your own I would invest in better quality materials (which might bring the price into an already made system that has a warranty )

It not only took the hesitation away but the motor idles a whole lot better now.

In case you are not sure what the grounding kit is, essentially it makes your sensors more accurate by properly grounding out the motor to different areas of the frame. I am not going to go into specifics here because there are ton's of places that can explain better than I can.

Maybe others will comment, or have other suggestions. You should have a dealer look at it or a mechanic you think that there is really something gravely wrong. Don't take chances with your beloved suby.

Just a couple of cents from another enthusiast

Thanks for the insight. I know about the grounding kits and may consider it. Her 98 GT has about 80K miles and is still on the stock wires. I'll probably change those out because I believe they're suppose to be changed every 3-4 years.

My car used to be very grumpy upon a cold start. This was when I was using 93 octane. I have since switched to 89 octane and have not had the problem since...

Just a thought

If you've done all the basic stuff- sparkplugs, plug wires, fuel filter- and still have the problem, it's possible it might be the coolant temp sensor.

There's a big thread on that in the "Service & Maintenance" forum. They seem to go slowly, and what you're describing sounds a bit familiar. Did you get a CEL yet?
