Exclamation My conversation with SoA factory rep: official WRX specs

Earlier today I spoke with the Subaru factory rep for the Southeastern region. I asked him alot of things but most revolved around the MY02 Impreza WRX.

First things first - the WRX will be available for sale on March 02, 2001. I am not sure if this is all across the U.S, but he invited me to the "debut" at a local dealership. He said the price would be $25,000. When I said I had hoped it would be closer to $23k, he responded by saying that the invoice would be about $2,500 below MSRP, so there would be room to negotiate. I then asked if there was alot of interest in the WRX, would dealers start price gouging. He confidently said that there would be none of that. (Does that mean SoA is not expecting _too_ much interest?)

Another very interesting revelation is that a significant amount of Imprezas imported would be WRX-spec. (I think somewhere in the ballpark of 75%).

Here is the juiciest stuff. The factory rep assured me the U.S.-spec WRX would have 248hp! My mouth starting to water and my pulse starting to race, I made sure he was saying we would be getting the same 248hp as the Japanese-spec WRX - YES. More than the Euro-spec WRX with only 215hp? - YES.

As far as the interior, we will be getting a "carbon-fiber filled" interior. I asked about the sport seats, and he wasn't too sure, but did say that there will be a suprising number of factory options! Oh, the WRX will be avaiable as sedan and wagon.

Well, there it is...any comments are welcome.

Good info. Welcome to the club. There has been a lot of speculation about this car and it nice to have more solid information like this. 250 HP would almost be too good to be true. A lot of people feel we will be getting a 215-230 HP engine and I'm sure lot's will take a wait and see what actually shows up at the dealer approach. If we get the 250 HP engine, then $25K is a deal. By way of comparison, a 250HP Audi S4 sells for $41,900. The extra horsepower will also help offset the perceived controversial styling of the round headlights. My own personal opinion is that it won't be enough. We'll wait and see.

Skibaru - thanks for the welcome! I have actually been reading the forums for months now. I know many people have been upset by the new model's headlights/taillights/fill in the blank, but I really think that once they see it in real life, some opinions will be changed. I am just hoping that 1)I can come up with a down payment, and 2)The insurance is not outragous.

Fishguy - I am not sure if you have seen pictures of the new WRX's interior, but from what I saw in "CAR" (10/00) and www.new-impreza.com, it features alot of aluminum-type material surrounding the center stack, air vents, and guages. I guess the U.S.-spec car will have carbon-fiber instead.

I think Subaru realizes the potential of the WRX in the U.S. and hopefully they will not disapoint us.

There is no way in hell that 75% of the impreza's will be WRX's!!!!!

Look at all of the familys who drive plain old impreza's!! There must be 40 for ever RS that is out there.

Firstly, welcome and thank you for the info.

Secondly, as much as I would want to have a US-spec WRX with 250hp stock for MSRP $25,000, I don't believe it can possibly happen.

How about giving us the rep's name and contact info?

Welcome to the sight!!

I am also a newbie but I have been reading the sight for about 6 months or more. I hope that all that you say comes out to be true. I am not doubting you personnally, but things always seem to get blown out of proportion.

I will also been right inline with alot of people to get my hands on a new WRX when they are avialable.

Well I agree that the MSRP will be around $25,000. I disagree on the power though. They have said the US will not get the variable valve timing, add that to our lower grade of gas, and I don't see 250hp being remotely possible. 75% being WRX's is a bit of a stretch too I'd say. Most people don't buy the top of the line car, so they have to bring more of the lower models.

Now I'm not saying your lying or anything. I just think your factory rep may be going off some rumors he heard on the inside that are probably not true.

If these reps just months before had never heard of a WRX do you really think they would know the specs of a car that isn't even on their own lots. Hell most salespeople at the dealerships will know vastly less then you. Whenever a rep or dealer offers info just tell him to shut up and call you the day the car is in his showroom. Until then the rumors are like ********. Everybodies got one.

Guys.. Here what I can tell you on my side.
People that know me, know that I am the founder of the Montreal Subaru Club.
I had some dinner with the guys of Subaru Canada at couple of time in the pass years.. 2 weeks ago at the rally FIA of Charlevoix, I had the chance to eat with them again, and here what they told me..

in the Story we are at the table at that date (Oct. 28)
For the HP, here what he told me.. Last news, 2 weeks ago, we was able to confirm that it was 227hps, but nothing was sure.

For the price. he told me that it was impossible to gave a price, because of Our Currency (CDN) and the YEn was always moving up and down.. and that the contract for the Car importation was finish and maybe that in the new one the taxs will be lower .. So with all those variation, he said that he cant tell anything for the price..

here is another good news.. They was supose to receive a new WRX last friday at their office.. at that dinner, they offer me to pass it to me to show it to the club member over here.. Dont ask, for sure that I said yes.. I am now waiting on news on them..

This is my little story. You do whatever you want to do with it. hehe

I know there's a lot of enthusiasm over the new WRX and the demise of the RS. As I look at it (especially since I'll have to be sticking with my beloved '99 for a few more years yet) is that the RS series only ran for 4 years ('98-'01) and is a very limited production run , which I think adds to its value and uniqueness. Consider it a bold experiment of Subaru, to test the waters for a real sports car.

Exactly, rare and even if you see another on the road he is probably a fellow iClub member. Besides, once the WRX is here and some smug owner wants to have an informal drag against the "Poor Cousin RS" I will be more than happy to apply my and trouce his ass with the help of Paeco and JC Sports.

Our local dealer (Chicago guys know whom I speak of) stated we were getting the same engine as Europe, with no wagon.

Too much speculation, this is killing me! Come on SOA!!! Give us the hard numbers!

Question

Rossi,
Where did you speak to this SE rep? I was at the Birmingham (Alabama) auto show Thursday night and the female Subaru rep I talked to, although she was quite cute, had no info whatsoever about the New Age Impreza.

In fact, I had just finished talking to her and a couple of guys walked up and asked her about the '01. She deferred their questions to me! I made up some stuff off the top of my head. hee hee

Also, where is the unveiling in the Southeast going to be? I have spoken with the dealer in Chattanooga where I got my RS and they were non-committal but interested.

Hang on hang on, here. I KNOW there is a lot of speculation, and I KNOW rumors abound, BUT some info is being consistently reported:

the 2.5RS is NOT dead; it will share the showroom with the turbo and the OBS. the 2.5l engine is now the standard mill for the line up. 2.2 is history.

A Turbo wagon is virtually guaranteed at this point.

HP is totally up in the air still, IMHO.

We can narrow turbo pricing from the original $20K-$30K to something like $24K-$27K

The headlights are gonna change from the current line.

For those already worried about proving virility in your current car: Pu-u-l-l-e-e-z-z-e! You car is kewl, too, m'kay? enjoy it for what it is! there's slow car owners in China who'd KILL for your car! Hell, I'D like a 2.5RS, but I can't afford it right now, turbo be damned!

First, thanks to all who have welcomed me! Although I don't appreciate being called a bull****ter (Pat). The last thing I would do is clutter up this board with more wild rumors. The purpose of this post was to inform the club of information I believe to be the truth, relayed to me by a SoA factory rep - someone who I put stock in. If this guy was some stealership floor salesman loser I would not have given his comments a second thought.

I met the rep at the International Auto Show that came to my area this weekend. His name is Greg Baum. Unfortunately, I do not have any contact information or I would have called him already. Let me say that he spoke very confidently about the WRX. In fact, he was almost reciting the specs.

The I-Club has been "promised" alot (WRX STi, 22B, etc.) in the past so I know you guys can be a cynical group. I really believe, though, that we finally have some solid information!

Oh yeah, lucien2 - I could not agree more with your last paragraph!

Hi rossi46, please don't be offended.

The BS flag does frequent duty in the club, and is by no means a personal attack. We try to inform each other on the latest news - and sometimes the sources can be suspect or questioned. I remember just a couple of months ago somebody was raising the BS flag that the new WRX would have round headlights, hehehe!

Seriously - welcome to the board.

rossi46,

please accept my apologies, at no time I intended to make my post a personal attack. Your message did sound sincere enough, however its content was clearly over the threshold that justified raising the B.S. flag.

We are all eager to grasp any minute detail that SoA throws at us about fore coming US WRX, and no way we should ever shoot the messenger no matter how crazy news could be. However, as you said yourself, and as it has became accustomed on the iClub we usually post a lot of comments, and opinions about the delivered news.

The opinions posted about WRX quite often involve BS flags due to highly questionable newsbits numbers. The news delivered by you did contain such conflicting figures that's why I raised the BS flag.

Thumbs down

Your rep is Mr. Baum, so you are located in district 8, which is between VA beach and Christianburg (he is not the rep for the entire southeast region.)

"If this guy was some stealership floor salesman loser I would not have given his comments a second thought."

You say that the BS flag offended you, well your comment above offended me, as I am one of those losers in question.

Mr. Baum gave you some bad information;

"He said the price would be $25,000." CLOSE, $25-26K

"Another very interesting revelation is that a significant amount of Imprezas imported would be WRX-spec. (I think somewhere in the ballpark of 75%)." I don't know where he got those figures, according to the southeast headquarters V.P. that was at the product planning workshop, including the FHI rep that was there, we will be lucky to see 30%.

"The factory rep assured me the U.S.-spec WRX would have 248hp!" considering they had to try 3 times to get the car to pass emissions at 238 that seems a little far-fetched.

Additional notes:
There will be 500 limited edition bright yellow WRX's built.

2. Is that 500 yellow ones for the USA, or the whole world?

Question

Ok, so a MY00-01 with all options comes to near 25K and now I'm seeing a NEW MY02 with a turbo (gaining about 83 HP) will cost about the same price or less? Is this fairy land? I don't mean to sound harsh but why would SOA sell a turbo impreza for the same price of a NA 2.5 RS? $30,000 or near that sounds more like it. (if it happens to be near to fairyland price I'll scratch the Turbo project and get the WRX)
