Default Too much?

So my trusty steed is bumping 145k, and it was time to make a decision; I know I want a turbo Leg, but I was going back and forth on what to do in the meantime. Long story short, I'm gonne keep my big black beast and drive it till it dies, then drive it some more, and forget about resale vs repair costs for the time being.

That said, I'm getting back in to the "what to do next" category.
I'm trying to grab some WRX seats, as my last deal fell through, and I need to grab some WRX rims + tires so I have something M+S for the winter up here (712's don't make good snow tires, but they're too new to swap out). Got me thinkin', my prized 99 RS wheels are going to just be sitting around for a few months.
I hate cleaning brake dust, and I love black wheels, so I'm thinking gloss black powdercoat on the RS wheels.

Whaddya think?

Too much, or just right?
And how much has it generally run people for PC jobs?
I'll probably do suspension at some point, but since winter's coming up, it's pointless to lower it before spring anyways.....

Quick PS....

I'm sorry to say, but I'm not too fond of black wheels in general. If you must go dark, why not powdercoat in a dark grey/anthracite/gunmetal/whatever you want to call it? There aren't too many OE99 16s in that color. I think it would compliment your lower "cladding" color much better than black even though your main color is black.

Or... how do you feel about bronze or gold? Probably too flashy, eh? Yeah, mostly weirdos with gold on their Legacy's...

I think gold is a bit much, it's too many colors on a black car, thought I do like the way gold 98's looked on a black OB Sport.

I'm thinking about a gunmetal or bronze, with a flat finish, but i worry that it'll look "off" with the lower cladding, or it'll look weird if it matches perfectly
so who knows

Eh?

It's not that low IRL, obviously, I was just messing around, that's what I'd like to get it to.......

Better?

Sybir, I just bought some of those wheels already powdercoated in gunmetal. I have tires ordered and they should be in this week. I'll get some pics if you want to show how the gunmetal goes with the lower cladding color of the outback. My main color is red though, but it should give you a decent idea? Also, what size tires are you running on those wheels? Do you have the 215/60 r16 or 205/55 r16? Thanks.

Ah, pics'd be great. The lower cladding should be identical on our two cars, so that'll help me out

I'm running 225/50/16 Kumho 712's; I've also run 205/55's and 215/55's with no problems. I've had my car down tot a finger gap in the rear loaded with stuff, and even over big bumps, no rub, so you should clear with almost any tire smaller than a 235

Hmmm, looking at that second photoshop, matching cladding and wheels does look kinda strange. Who'd have thought? I'm liking the darker gold/bronze color though. Did you 'lower' it in those? Looks good at that height. Maybe should wait and see for jharl's pics of the gunmetal.

LOL
a few months back, when i had no cash, a yard in Reno was getting rid of 4 perfect condition white OB doors
I was so tempted to make a bluesmobile it wasn't even funny, but I couldn't come up with a measly $100 for a frill like that

Hehe, now that I ps'd it, I'm liking anthracite
go figure

If it makes you feel better, that's an old picture

car more recently

better?

Really, all it takes is a little wax; I use this stuff called Racer's Edge, I can wax my whole car in about 30-40 minutes, and while it's not show quality, it really makes the paint pop out.

I've got to do something to draw attention away from the $2200 in body damage down the passenger side and the 23 other dings,
My car looks like crap most of the time, just tend to take pictures when it's gussied up

Car was digitally lowered, yup
I'm thinking some WRX wagon lowering springs can mebbe get me to about that point, though, so mebbe in spring.

and yes, that's a cop car in the background

How much is the guy looking to get for his seats? Seems like shipping would be ridiculous, unless I can get my parents to pick up seats on their way to Victoria........

Nice to see a subie in its element.

Too many of the Impreza boys are babying their cars. Cant wait for the snow to come this year, weather people predict that its gonna be a snowy winter.

And I just fried my RE-92's at the track yesterday too.

Toronto is quite a far ways off from Victoria. About 5000kms off. So just a bit out of the way. Its like saying I'll drop by in Seattle while I go visit family in Orlando.

The ridiculous shipping charges is only one way dude, our government robs us of all savings when I ship in from the States.

here's the link to the thread on the Toronto Subaru Club forums. Im committee over there and most of these guys I've met in person so possibility of a scam is very small. Especially with a regualr like him. but still; buyer beware in all cases.

1 vote for body-cladding color

Looks very very very nice. It kinda brings everything together, IMO

Yeah, I'm swaying towards gunmetal.

I was joking about the Victoria thing, btw
and just shipping seats in general is expensive; I would hate to have your duties, though.....

Ahh ok..

Yeah our duties suck.

I purchased 3 cds for 5$usd off of ebay. Our customs dudes opened the package and said it had a value of 40$. So I ended up having to pay 11$ worth of tax/handling/customs fees.

Its lame...

Well its not the greatest picture, overcast and the lighting was bad, and I still don't have the tires on. But I thought I'd at least give you something. I will do more pics though when tires are on.

Those look nice, man

Hey, a question. At the time I got my car, the only way to get that bright red was to get a Limited. It seems like the burgundy color was the "red" for the base cars, but now I've seen a couple that don't look like Limiteds in that red. Is that custom paint, or factory?

Well, darn. Those look nice. I guess you can't loose with either choice. Have at it.

Sorry to hear about the crap damage on the passenger side. Never ever take pics of that side. I have the requisite gouges on the bump strips on the doors. Gotta love parking lots.

It's factory paint as far as I know, and it's not a limited. Where those 215/55's or 215/60's you've had before? I kinda wish now I'd have asked about what tire sizes fit before I ordered the 205/55's. Anyways thanks.

No worries

Let me put your mind at ease. No matter what tires you put, your speedo isn't going to be more than 2-3 mph off, which should be within tolerances anyways.

The first pics of my car are with 205/55/16 Bridgestone RE92's. The second pic (in the snow) is with the 215/55/16 Kumho Ecsta 711's. This is the closest I've run to stock OB size, since I didn;t want to limit my suspension choices (stock OB tire height will rub on Legacy or Impreza-spec spring perches, but that's another story.)

I'll try and find some pics with my 225s. They fill out the fenders really nicely, look meaty, and stick for days, and no rub. that said, the car can be a bit more lively with the 205's, and that's not a bad thing, as you can rotate it easier and steer the car with the throttle a bit more. I'm actually at the point where I have to crank my car at full bore into a turn and then fully lift, and even stab the brakes, to step the back end out, and it's gathered again almost instantly. I can do immediate panic lane changes at 90+ as well, with no sliding, so I'm happy. Run the 205's, have some fun with them, then try something bigger when you replace them.

If it helps, here's some general sizing rules.

Legacy stock diameters (I'll go with GT-spec) will be 205/55/16, ~225/50/16 (1% off), 215/45/17, or 225/40/17.

OB spec: 205/70/15, 215/65/15 (hair shorter than stock), 205/60/16, 215/60/16, 225/55/16 (tires pretty hard to find, IIRC), 215/50/17, or 225/45/17.

Nothing's gonna be perefect, but there's enough variances even between tires to make it not really an issue.
My speedo seems to still be pretty accurate even though I'm running slightly shorter tires (I think OB stock is 26.2 and GT stock is 24.9)

Hope that helps, lemm know if you have any other questions....
