Subaru Impreza

Given the success of the old Impreza Subaru had a job on their hands to try and produce a car that would continue the cult status of the original. Controversial looks clothe a much stiffer body and much improved interior. While there are three engine choices, including a 1.6-litre, a 2.0-litre it is the 2.0-litre turbocharged WRX model that is likely to take the majority of sales. Four-wheel-drive and the 215bhp turbocharged flat four engine in the WRX gives the Impreza crushing cross-country ability, with direct and communicative steering giving the driver all the information they need at the wheel. Bigger, better and easier to drive than the old model the WRX offers drivers far more refinement than the previous model, as do the lesser models. The 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre versions offer the same sort of surefooted handling as the WRX without the power. Offered in either saloon or wagon form the Impreza may be more refined, with a better interior, and specification, than the previous model, but in making it a more competent all-rounder it has lost much of what was so appealing about the old model, the raw thrill of driving it.
