Default 1986 gl lights dim

On way to work my 1986 subaru gl 1.6 lights would dim when I hit brakes. now car will not start
Could this indicate a bad alternator?
When I turned off lights while driving a 3 letter indicator light came on that began with E

Sounds like a faulty alternator. Switch it out and you should be good

The light is likely EGR or ECS. That is likely not related as on most models its programmed to come on every 60,000 miles. Deal with the alternator first and then tackle the warning light. There should be some plugs under the dash that you switch around. (doing a search on the USMB for EGR reset or ECS reset should bring up something)
