Post P1 - Evo Magazine's 3rd Place "car of the year"...

If you guys missed it, the January issue of Evo (British) Magazine had their Car of the year contest which compared their faves of 2000;

1. Porsche 911 Turbo
2. Lamborghini Diablo V6
3. Subaru Impreza P1 !!!
4. Lotus 340R (no top, no side window racer)
5. Vauxhall VX220
6. TVR Tuscan
7. Noble M12 (Lotus Elise-based beauty)
8. Ferrari 360 Spider F1
9. Lotus Exige (racing hardtop elise)
10. Toyota MR2 !!!
11. Renault Clio V6
12. Mercedes CL55 AMG
13. BMW 330d
14. Alfa 147

They describe the P1 as "an all-weather, 4-seat, ground-attack weapon ... stunningly effective ... in the real world, this will give any car - any car at all - a severely hard time."

Sorry if this has been posted before!

They also dismissed the new-school Impreza as essentially a step back for Subaru. In the same issue the new WRX Sti version still got beaten by the "old" Evo VI...

Did I mention that I reeeeeeeaaalllly want a P1!!!

I find that kind of interesting, because every review ive ever read has said that the Makinen EVO-6.5 is a far more balanced car then the P1, in all catagorys.

Hmmm...maybe they havent gotten one to test yet?

Yeah, the EVO was strangely absent, probably because it is only available in the UK as a grey-market?

The new WRX STi vs. Evo WAS against the Makinen edition tho...

the more i look at this list, i question its integrity.

The subaru makes sence. But a Vauxhall be better then a TVR?!

Or a Toyota MRS placing better then a Renault Clio?!

Those i just dont get.

The Vauxhall VX220 is the same type of car as the Elise, only more civilised. The Clio V6 hasn't gotten very good reviews in any of the British car mags that I've read. The EVO VI is an official import, all before it were grey-market.

Also, the Noble M12 is not Elise based. It is an amazing 2200 lb composite chassis coupe with a twin turbo V6. The British sure know how to build a kit car!

OK, where to start

This is a Vauxhall VX220

It was designed by Vauxhall in conjunction with Lotus, and has been described by a few magazines as better than the Elise, if only it didnt have the Vauxhall badge on it !!

TVR hmmm, nice car, sounds nice, can be a pain in the butt if its wet, also very very unreliable !

EVO's, some are being officially bought in by Mitsubishi, but they are still grey imports, they come into the country by the same route as say, i would have to bring one in ! Oh, and EVO had an EVO 6 as a fleet car, so they have had one for a long time, it has blown its engine after some work was done on it ! I dont think there is a car that EVO havent tested to be honest !

The Clio V6, looks like it should be a killer car, but on the road it just isnt ! all the mags are saying it is a very big let down!!!

Question

Hmmm....it sorta looks like a slightly restyled Opel Speedster. Do you happen to know if GM is building it off the same chassis?

Its very likely its the same car, Opel and Vauxhall are both GM companies ! and produce identical cars with different badging. Vauxhall in the UK Opel in the rest of europe

The Vauxhall supposedly WAS better than the Elise ... but now the Mark II Elise is out (same issue of Evo) and is apparently superior, and pissing off Vauxhall!!!

Still, Ian, I am beyonf jealous of your car choices!!! Can you guys get Honda S2000's over there? Or Altezza/IS300's in sticks?

S2000 = Yes we get them

we dont get the IS300 but do get the IS200 get GS300 which is a bit of a barge mobile (huge in other words) though ! not sure if they are available in stick though ! think the IS200 is.

Oh and the VX220 has a 2.2 16 valve engine in it ! forgot to mention that, yes the Elise MK2 is out now, not sure whether i like it as much as the MK1 or not yet, its supposedly a much better car though !

Well, based on seeing the Elise Mk I when I was in London last spring, and seeing the pix in Evo of the Mark II ... they are both gorgeous!!! I do kind of like the new one better, a bit more streamlined ... I can only pray they actually bring it to the States, they say they might!!

Cheers!
