over drive is a swith to make the gearshift go to 4th gear. when you are in the high way and going 60 mhp, if you turn it off you will notice that the RPM is higher than usual. if you push that button on or as in Subarus 3rd gear and shift up to "D" that works like over drive.

Toyotas have a push botton over drive.
Subarus one the other hand have something like this
**
P
R
N
D
3
2
1
**
when you put it on the "D", you can shift it to "N" and "3" without stepping on the brake.

Subarus don't have push button like Toyotas so they are operated be just simply shifting it to "3" or just leaving it on "D"

hope you get what i'm saying
Good Luck

So is that the fourth gear is equal to the over drive?

Then is that 4EAT (D,3,2,1) with over drive is equal to 3 speed automatic plus one addition gear for overdrive? (D,S,L)?

The reason Subaru doesn't have a button like Toyota is becuase its 4EAT computer is smart enough that if you quickly slam the accelerator down the floor, it will down shift to 3rd gear for more power. Overdrive is in almost all the auto tranny. The last gear is called over drive because it locks torque converter to save gas at high speed. As for the other shift positions, they are for different driving conditions. 3 means it will never shift into 4th gear. It is good in slippray road for better engine braking force. 2 is used to lauch the car in snow or ice for maximum traction. 1 for climb step slops. In normal driving, always put in D position.

The 4eat computer isn't smart enough, and it likes to continually destroy the transmission durring swift twisties, I hate the computer, it's stupid yea I do sound like a baby.

By 'smart enough', I mean I never feel the need for that special power button like Toyotas have. Smooth shifting it is not.

So is that after the 4 then it will "locks the torque converter to save gas at high speed"?

That will be after 3rd. 4th is the overdrive and will lock the TC. You know you're in 4th when gas pedal change does not chang engine RPM too much.

"Overdrive" simply means that 4th gear (or whatever the highest gear is) is OVER a 1:1 ratio.

that's correct, meaning that there are more teeth on the input than the output.
