Default Will this steering wheel I just won fit my 97 Impreza "L" wagon? (Ebay link)

I just won this steering wheel on Ebay, thinking that all Impreza steering wheels were interchangable, then I actually READ the auction and it implies that it only fits 02-04.

Did I just make a boo boo?

Link to auction

Reassure me I'm hopefully not dumb

Anyone know for sure on the airbag (or heck, the wheel?)

Do I have to do cutting perhaps to get the airbag to work?

Anyone have a link I can go to find more out about this? Any information at all would be GREATLY appreciated.

The wheel will physically bolt up and the air-bag harness clip will fit into your USDM but you will have to get the dealer fix the impedence differences to get the airbag to function normally. Or you could drive w/ your airbag light on all the time.

Can you elaborate on that? What is involved in fixing the impedance and why does the dealer have to do it?

I have no idea how to modify the signals going to the airbag deployment system. All I know is that on most of the safety systems in Japanese make cars, they used a different range of signal strength and frequency than do N.Am. made vehicles. JDM Subaru airbags are made by the same company that makes them for Nissan. They are identical is evey single way except for the cover. A client we had put a Cosmo steering wheel w/ airbag on his RX7. He was involved in an accident were the dash mounted airbag deployed but the steeringinwheel one did not. He broke his jaw on the steering wheel. He was declined any sort of financial aid from his insurance co. for his facial injuries b/c the airbag was "not of factory specs". Mazda had no option but to back them up. It bolted up and pluged in fine but did not help him in that instance. In fact, it hurt him.

I don't know if you know this but ALL airbag equiped vehicles sold in N.America have reduced strength front seatbelts. They are designed only to slow the acceleration of your body forward into the airbag. Seat belts & airbags are designed to work TOGETHER! I know this first hand b/c I was involved in a head-on collision on a highway & am lucky to be here b/c of my knowledge of that fact.

Consider what is more important to you. a fashionable steering wheel or your life. Remember the safety equipment is not design to save you fro your actions, but to save you from other ppl's.

And I agree totally with you, that is why I am replacing an airbag steering wheel with another airbag steering wheel, and it is important to me the new one works as well as the old one. I hadn't considered that airbag <> airbag.

I'll try to do more research

(P.S. I think people who put light weight bumper beams and other such items on are crazy, I need that stuff to not die)
