Default STI cluster???

Well, I am not satisfied with the answers I have found to this question. I have a 98RS and I'd LOVE to run an STI cluster with the center TACH!!!! I know it isn't plug and play even with the V4 sti cluster, but how much work would it be to custom wire the harness to work with the 98 STI cluster. Could the wires simply be cut and spliced with the corresponding pins for it to work right??? Anyone though about this and or done it? Any ideas and help would be great!

- Cheers

Chris

I have a V5 JDM cluster in my 99RS. There was no modification required aside from plugging it in.

Yup, I have a Ver. 5 cluster that my friend has plugged into his MY01 RS. Works fine, without modification.

You will NEED a Ver. 4, though, as the wiring changed for MY99, and the shape changed in MY98 so a Ver. 3 won't work either.

I'm currently shopping for one (Ver. 4 STi cluster). If I get one, I'll let you know how it works.

Yeah, now I need $100. Do you wanna keep that cluster in your car, Mike? I'll sell it to ya for, say, $100.

Which cluster did you guys get? I found these 2 on the Japanese STi Site (translated via babelfish). Its cheaper just to get tach+speed meeter. Is that what you guys have? And these just plug right in... sweet.

I have a 98 as well and bought just the 10,000RPM and 280 KPH speedo and tried to swap but didn't work the configuration is different.....I had to buy the whole Version IV Cluster and then I had to send in My wire harness to get it rewired...Dave at Rallispec did this for me great work......You have to send in your Wire harness it has 2 quick disconnects under the dash....Hope this helps..Ron

Hey guys... just thought I would throw some comments in here.

I got a V5 cluster to install in my MY01 RS and it does not work.

The wire harness is not the problem, so cutting and splicing wires will not help you. The wires are in the correct places, so in that regard it is plug and play. The problem is the EJ20 STI ECU sends out a slightly different signal than the NA ECU's. If you plug you cluster in and drive around the guages move, and appear to function correctly, but the values are off, and the needles will not move smoothly.

So if all you want is the look then go for it. Keep in mind that they cluster will be almost worthless for knowing how fast you are going, or what speed the engine is turning.

I talked to a few people that have done cluster swaps, and proper installation will require changing out some PCB components on the back of the cluster.

Once I get all of the information about what to swap, I will do mine. If it is easy, I might do others as well.

Crap, sorry, Jeff. I didn't know all that stuff was involved. The guy I bought it from said he had it in his car and it worked fine. Then I had my buddy Mike throw it in his car for a minute and it *appeared* to work. Sorry to hear this is not really the case.

Who are you getting the information from, Cobb?

Good luck, man. Let me/us know how it turns out.

Yeah, to have things read properly, the unit needs to be modified slightly. I don't know exactly what , but apparantly Trey Cobb has done it before.

The info might be out there for free somewhere too, good luck finding it.

Any news on this topic (as I dig this thread out of the dungeon)?

I recently picked up a V3 for my MY98, and while the plugs matched up perfectly, the signals didn't. ie, the turn signal made the CEL blink, while the turn signal was a constant on (with the key in the "on" position).

Am I just looking at revamping the wiring by taking the correct signal wires and matching them to the plugs?(turn signal wire goes to turn signal on cluster) Does anyone out there have a wiring diagram for a V3 cluster?

Wiring isn't a huge thing to me, and I have a KMH->MPH converter ready to go for the speedo. So, if it's just cutting and splicing of wires, it's very much doable. Any thoughts?
