Question Clutch Shudder?

MM

I have been to the dealer numerous times about severe clutch shudder, that started occuring on my 2003 Baja about three months after purchase. It is way more noticable in wet weather, but seems to always be there, sometimes worse than others.

The dealer says this is inherent with this model.

Has anyone else experienced this? Ideas on what to do?

Thank you

This car is still under warrenty. Shouldn't Subaru be replacing the clutch, if neccessary? I don't have $400.00. Is that $400 for the clutch or for the clutch and the labor? I am not a mechanic.

If you have more then one Subaru dealer in your area try going to the other service dept... one of them is bound to want your business.

Or get really pissy, ask to speak to the service manager and demand that it gets fixed. Make them drive it if need be. If they won't ask them for Subaru of America's number and call them. Put you foot down and make them deal with it.

I won't proclaim to be an expert on whether Baja's have an inherent problem with clutch shudder...but know that in my research of the car I never ran into that as an issue. I've owned 6 Subarus and all but one have been manual transmissions and never had a shudder problem. I've also never had it as a constant problem in any of the many other cars I've owned over 32 years of driving.

I would offer that I found that the clutch on my Baja engages much closer to the floor that any other manual transmission vehicle I've owned. As a result, it is easier, in my opinion, to "ride" the clutch - not to release it fully or as rapidly as you should under some traffic conditions. Doing this will lead to excessive clutch wear and could cause the shuddering you mention. The fact that it occurs more when wet seems to indicate the clutch is slipping.

Only you can address how you drive. Unfortunately, clutch wear is typically not covered under warranty unless it can be proven that there is a material flaw in the vehicle. I saw a similar issue with BMW Z3s and clutch wear - although I never experienced the problem with my '96 Z3, the clutch is considered a normal wear and tear item. If you don't think that you're driving style is a cause of the problem, and the dealer won't help, I would recommend that you ask the dealer to have the Area Subaru Rep look at the problem. If the dealership won't do that, you can always go through the Subaru of NA web page and ask for assistance.

Just my $.02. I hope everything works out for you.

Default Stand your ground

Either way, a 3 month old vehicle should not have clutch problems. Especially a Subaru...
Subaru of America should be able to get you a straight answer on the problem.
Do not back off until it is fixed. Keep bumping it up the food chain until someone takes you seriously and solves the problem.
Don't put it off until it does become a "Normal wear and tear" debate.

Wink Thank you

Thanks for your replies. I am going back tomorrow, for another round. Even though the one year "bumper to bumper" is up in Oct. I think if I can show I've been investigating this for a while they will "grandfather" it.

I will keep you posted.

Angry They mentioned this

The dealer mentioned this problem, and the mechanic said that my car had the updated clutch & flywheel.

Sheesh! Way back in the 80's I had my (car I loved) 1986 Subaru 4x4 Turbo 3dr catch fire. Subaru said it wasn't their fault the tire in the engine compartment prevented me from extingusihng the flames and saving the vehicle and all that was in it. (I was moving) I swore at that time I would never buy another Subaru, but the Baja was so perfect for my lifestyle, 24/7 work hours and a horse hobby, that I relented. If they "dis" me on this problem I think I'll go back to my vow. Bummer I really liked both cars.
