Default Squeaking sounds only when clutch is engaged...

My Legacy is making a squeaking sound (at the frequency of about 6 squeaks per second) whenever the clutch is engaged - I push the clutch down and it goes away. I really only notice it when it's at idle engine speeds, but it has gotten progressively louder over the last week.

Anyone have an idea what this is a sign of? I know my transmission/engine mounts have been really sloppy lately, could it be that, or is the clutch about to go out? Thanks all!

Throwout bearing. Mine had it as well at about 70k miles. It sounds kinda like a cricket. Almost like a 'chirpchirpchirpchirp', right? Push the clutch in about an inch, and it goes away. I had my clutch replaced at a private garage. Cost me about $530, I think.

Someone else may chime in here with more info, but that's probably what it is. Mine did it for about a year before I replaced it.

Good luck-
Rich

Yup, Rich, you've described the sound exactly. So the bearing is just wearing out? If you let it go for more than a year, I guess it's not a critical thing?

Well, it proved to not be critical in my case, but I don't know that I'd encourage anybody else to wait that long. I've seen it talked about in other forums here. Maybe in the transmission forum, if you do a search, you can get some better info on it. Like what it's doing, and what are the consequences of letting it go too long. I autocross mine, and it got to where the clutch was slipping on hard launches. The guy that replaced it said the clutch itself seemed okay, but the pressure plate was 'burned' around the edges. He seemed to think that was caused by excessive downshifting without matching revs real well. I downshift on the street alot, but I don't think I have a problem with matching revs. (And I dont' really drive it hard on the street.) I think that the autocrossing probably created that situation. Repeated runs to redline in second gear, followed by hard braking without disengaging the clutch. Repeat often. Oh well, the factory clutch made it to 70k miles. I wasn't too displeased with that.

yep it is the throw out bearing, just sitting in there spinning. Mine has been doing that for about 40,000 miles. Have not had problems so far, just annoying. Clutch works fine so I figure why replace it since it cost so much.

Well it also slips when it's really cold - it did it when it was 10 below zero last winter, but it's already starting to on a cold day this year, which is only 50 degrees so far! Other than that, the clutch just slips a little easier than other cars I've driven (I've only owned the car for a year)... so are these all bad symptoms?

sounds like you need a clutch & flywheel.

Flywheel too? I've been reading up on the Transmission forum, haven't seen that come up yet.

well, mine was replaced at 180k miles along with rear crank seal.

so perhaps your flywheel is ok, just makes sense to not have play all that labor again.

Well I've only got 68k miles, but you have a good point - I thought about getting the flywheel changed while I'm at it. I've been thinking about an upgrade - maybe the Exedy light weight one - nothing like doing that upgrade for only half the cost because the labor is already being done. Then I'll be double-clutching on EVERY shift...

the 99 gt with 69,000 miles - i just bought from carmax started doing that a few days in - by the time they got around to working on it the bearing at severely scored the pressure plates spring fingers - (i've had the tips of the springs snapp off on snother vehicle and shred the clutch plate) so i get a new clutch and bearing for fre - yay

maybe short term - but it will return and over time destroy your pressure plate - start saving up for a new clutch
