Default Looking for a cheap beater car

I thought I was getting a free Buick Century from my aunt who's leaving the country next month, so I didn't hav to worry about finding a car right now. but after a conversation with her last night on the phone, i discovered that she actually wants me to pay her $4000 for this 91!

So I told her and I'm gonna have to look for another daily driver/beater/commuter car. Ideally I'd like to not spend too much, like 3-4K. I mean come on, if I gotta spend 4K for a car, it sure as hell ain't gonna be a Buick Century!

I might pay $1000 for it, but not more. So unless she'll take $1000 for it, (and I don't think that she will. . .plus my dad was thinking about the buick too, so maybe I can buy the Hatchi Roku from him and drive that. . .)

But if any of you see's an old civic or something around that looks decent, let me know and I might be interested. . .

if I find a civic beater, you KNOW it's getting the full on rice treatment. . .i mean, come on if it's a beater, then why not.

actually, one of my coworkers just bought a beater cavalier for 700 (his car was totalled, and the insurance company was looking for a replacement car for him for over a month, so he bought a beater instead of haveing to pay for a rental. . .)
so he just got a grand prix replacement, so maybe i can get him to sell me the cav for his purchase price. . .

we'll see. . .

i checked on kelly blue book and that buick is only worth something in the 1-2000 dollar range. $4k is rediculous for that pos.

If you get a Honda, can I help put on the shop class / erector set spoiler? It will add all the necessary downforce for your FWD car plus it gives you that racer's edge! A Honda could be fun, I never thought of it that way. Beater/Ricer POS car!

I would get a JEEP, you can find'em for 4k or less, parts are SOOO cheap, they are fun as hell. I am getting one for a deal. I know you can find them, there is a huge community of resources too, and most "real" Jeep people are pretty cool, kinda like the Suby crowd, always willing to help another Jeeper.

my roommate has a ghetto 91 Mazda 626 if you want it (Chicago). He wants at least 1000 for it... it has about 100,000 miles on it, but it had the engine replaced after like 30,000 miles... if you truly want a beater, this fits the bill pretty well. When I ride in it, I fear that it will die at any time but it doesn't... a car enthusiast could probably fix it up to a level of decency. Just a thought in case you're interested.

I got a '96 Legacy Outback that needs a little work. Nothing too major. I am looking for $2700 out of it though. PM me if interested.

I agree with this one David. An old Cherokee or CJ may not be a bad choice, although their reliability is kinda hit or miss. I know people that have had them last 150k+ no problems, and some that have problems.

I'll keep my eyes open for other stuff David, we have lots of crappy beaters up here. I know there's a Chevy Beretta for like $750.

My dad just bought a 1994 Jeep YJ for 5k, I know a little high for a "beater" but this thing is SO freakin clean, like new. I was shocked, no rust even.

I just can't get into a car with no fun factor... and Jeeps have that fun top down off road action.
