Default Solo II mods

The bug has bitten and I want to go faster!

Currently running my 97 Legacy Outback in CSP with the following mods:

clutch/flywheel
Whiteline rear anti roll bar and links
Whiteline front anti roll bar links
Air intake
underdrive pulley
205/55x16 Azenis
greenstuff pads
Ground control coilovers on KYB GR2 struts
Stainless stell brake lines
-1.5 front camber
0 rear camber
o toe f & r

Here is what I am considering:

front camber plates (-2.5)
competition drivers seat (wife loves heated passenger seat)
more aggressive dampers, pref adjustable
replacement bushes
cat-back exhaust
high flow cat
front anti roll bar bushes
anti lift kit
front strut bar
225/50 x 15 competion tires on stock rims
odyssey 15lb battery
move battery to rear
rear lsd
front lsd
remove any weight I can

The question is, with limited funds, what are the best mods for the buck and have I missed anything?

Anything up there illegal?

Paul

Yeh, but that puts me in a whole new class to play catch-up in.

Do you have results from Sunday by the way?

Not very. I usually finish about 12th out of about 20 in CSP but most of them are Miatas and CRX. It's just not fair. You could put a CRX in my trunk!

yeah... there is some problem with all the classing.. if I am serious next year and enter the regional events, I will complete with another Legacy with highly tuned 2.5l turbo! Go down the page and you will see his drifting video!

Anyway, sometimes it is hard to directly compete with others.. I am happy as long as I can beat my time every run!

I got all the basic bolt-up mods like you.. and my wish list:

rear LSD and camber plate.

I might need new bushing as well.. my passenger side front wheel alignment is off again.. got it aligned one year ago.

basically, I don't want to spend money on power mod, eventually the DOHC will die.. and engine swap will be done!

Have fun!

I personally think you've got a pretty good setup as it is. IF I absolutely HAD to get something, I would probably either go with the race rubber or the ALK. More than likely I'd pick the Race rubber. But aside from that, you're car should be setup well enough to take on a good portion of the field.

What spring rates do you have currently, and what are car dynamics are your trying to tune in.

If you can help us out by explaining the characteristics you want to achieve, then we can help out. The Legacy can compete with the Miata's and CRX's with the right mods. Some mods are free from points too.

Please be as detailed as possible.

Thanks... Just trying to help out.

In Ontario, CSP is (my class too) is populated with very modified muscle cars... Camaro SS's, Mustang Cobra, you name it...

Etam,

Theres a good chance that the classifications will change slightly next year. Don't lose hope yet. You did a great job against the C2 champion last week, as a matter of fact, you killed his efforts successfully. Congrats, and thanks for all the videos.

no results yet, Paul. You did quite well by Legacy standards last weekend, though. I dunno how the competition was in class for you Sunday......I'm sure STS was won by Eric.

limeylight, actually, as Joe say, does your car still understeer? did you try to put back the stock front sway bar?

Joe, it would be ashamed to get beat by a stock Legacy. but still, it was a really close call...

CSP in the current Canadian rules and regs, and FSP in the new CNAC Rules. I guess you'd call it P2 in SCCA (not sure)

Thanks, these are great responses to my post and very helpful.

Let me try to respond to some of the questions posed and some of the comments.

Quote:
JoeT: What spring rates do you have currently, and what are car dynamics are your trying to tune in.
Spring rates are 315lb/in front and 250lb/in rear. I feel the car understeers more than it could though I have been told by an expert ride-along that it turns in very well. I'm sure it's me. I get a lot of power on understeer in tight bends.

Yes, as above it still understeers but not as much as it used too. I still have the stock front anti roll bar just new links.

Isn't that for Imprezas? I think FSP is where I should be.

Thanks again.

Based on your spring rates, if you want to increase your cars' ability to rotate, I would increast the rear spring rates.

On my car, I have 5KG front and 7 KG rear, giving an effective spring rates of about 330 at the wheels. Befor that, I had a 6 kg rear setup which gave about 230 at the rear, and changing up to a 7 kg, made a huge difference.

I still need slightly higher spring rates in the rear though, but I'm out of rebound dampening adjustments on my coil overs. Winter I'll send them out to get re-valved to add another 30% rebound.

But yep... increasing the rear spring rate is pretty cheap, and won't bump you up any more than where you are now.

Or if you really want to experiment with rotation, swap them around, put the high rate springs in the rear, and hang on to your hat.

Also tire pressures play a huge difference in the ability to rotate. At the SPDA we run huge differential pressures between the front and the rear.

We'll get to that at another time though.

Hope this helps.
