You don't know about it..

Default Check Engine Light

After Hurricane Isabel I went outside to start my car (95 Legacy Sedan. 2.2L, Auto, FWD). It sputtered and shuddered and had a nasty little whine to it and sounded like an 86 Toyota Tercel.

It warmed up to opp. temp and I drove it a few miles and all was fine. I drove it back to school (75 miles) the next day (started with no problems).

Today, I went out to go start the car (after having sat for 2 days).

She started really hard, and when it finally got going my check engine light was flashing, I was getting rev-jumping from 500 RPM's to 2k and anywhere in between. It did it in gear as well as park/neutral. It didn't go away with a blip of the throttle, even at full opperating temp. I sometimes have a problem of starting my car and it reving at 2k RPM's until I blip the throttle or something.

I opened the hood and nothing was obviously wrong. Throttle was clear and everything. I just had an oil change as well. Everything was fine before today. It was sort of out-of-the-blue.

So for about 5 minutes my Check Engine Light was flashing at me as my revs were bouncing around (even while I was slowly accelerating in 1st).

I had to jump across a road to get to the Sheetz and when there was a break in traffic, I gave it a good bit of throttle. To my disappointment, it just sputtered across the lane and into the parking lot. It felt like it had the power of a small lawnmower.

After leaving Sheetz (the car sat for a good 10 minutes turned off, CEL came back on when I started it up, it started hard again), I had to go back across the road. I got rolling at a good 5mph and gunned it to cross the road, and again a sputter like I was on 1 cylinder.

From a decent clip, flooring it, the car acts normal.

Nothing else was effected.

Can anyone help me identify the problem?

It's a 95 with about 126,000 miles on it. I am the second owner and have put about 30k on it since March of 2002.

What do you think the problem might be? This car has been kind of maintainence whorish in the time I have had it. It's been in the shop like 2 or 3 times for labor totaling more than 1k each time. Is it going to be worth keeping it around? I really hope so. I can't afford a new car now (probally a Legacy Outback Wagon).

Thanks everyone! This site is great!

sounds like your ignition system is wet.

get a new coil pack and wire set. plugs wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Do you have any Autozones in the area? They'll pull the fault code for free. That will at least give you an idea of what to look for. Once you get the code you can go to the CEL thread in the 'Service and Maintenance' (or something like that) forum and see if anybody has good advice or a fix for it.

The test connector is about halfway down the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

Well, actually... now that I look, I'm not sure when OBD II came in. Anybody else know for sure?

95 was the last year of OBD1 for BMW, so I would imagine around 95 or 96 for OBD2.

There is an autozone a ways away. Maybe 20 miles. I'll take it over there on thursday (no classes), and see what they have to say about it. Hopefully I can get it straightened out quickly.

Misfiring 4th Cylinder.

When I started it up this morning, I had all kinds of smoke coming out of my tail pipe.

She goes to the Mechanic tomorrow morning bright and early.
