Question Good used legacies?

Just wondering what's a good year to buy legacy? Was thinking Imprezas, but they seem to be really expensive (For really good ones anyways).
Was thinking an older legacy, but not too sure. Trying for under 15k Canadian (preferably less).

Suggestions? Which ones should I avoid (had many problems)?

Plans: daily driver, sometimes autoX, some modding (but not a ton). Looking for AWD and reasonable power to weight ratio.

i just bought my legacy 2.5 gt 4 weeks ago and i love it i got it with 89000 km for $12000 cdn. in toronto. found it on autotrader.ca and bought it the next day great find and love the car. The best thing i would say about these cars is if you bye it used chances are some family had it or an older and more responsible person had it. In my case is was lady driven and she took it in for regular maintanace. I think the power is ok but then again i was driving a 91 civic hatch. Also not to many exterior mods but then again the car looks great stock. Dont forget it is AWD witch means your car can deal with winter while other civics and such get put away or stuck in 2 inches of snow HAHAHA. oh well we'll see what other people have to say.

Pretty much all Legacys are very reliable. Of course the older it is and the more mileage the more likely it is to have problems. The biggest issue I have heard of is head gaskets on some of the 2.5 engines. The 2.2 engines are very reliable but less powerful.

(I have a '95 with 170,000 miles on it. Most of it is still original, including the battery, clutch, shocks, exhaust, etc, etc. )

Comparable Imprezas should be cheaper, though. Why would they be more expensive than a bigger car?

Well, I guess what I meant was that good used legacies are somewhat cheaper than good used imprezas. Just looking at buy and sell right now... but you're right, it does seem strange.

What year did the Legacy have the engine problems? Or was it over a certain period? (Maybe that's why some Legacies are cheaper than some Imprezas)

It's a problem with a weak head gasket that affects MY98 Legacys AND Imprezas. It's only a problem with the 2.5 DOHC engine. There's lots of posts about it in other forums.. try searching "head gasket" or "overheating".

That said, I have a 98 Legacy Outback with 105k km on it without problems yet.
