Default sti drop in filter

I heard alot of different things about intakes such as air sensors messing up oil filters damaging sensors (K&N style)and CAI just not doing much so my idea was to go with a drop in filter STI since they are all about subaru and maybe remove the resivour thing that tones down sound not sure what it is called any ways just wanted to know if anyone has one or heard of someone with one and if it a good idea . I know a intake dosen't do much on it's own but this is my first upgrade to my new car and i guess i want to use good parts and the sti just seems like a quality part that won't give me any problems. Any ways any info would help in this purchase thanks.

the k and n would be ok, but when you reoil them after you have cleaned them then you need to be very careful on how much oil you put on.

there is talk that the k and n let in tons of dirt, but i have a friend who has had his on his lude for about 115k miles and he has not had any motor problems.

not sure the JDM and USDM airboxes are the same size, so the filter may or may not fit.

I removed the silencer on mine - had it for 7000 miles now, and it's a noticable power increase. Put a K&N in about 5500 miles ago - seems to work pretty well.
