Question How often do you change Synthetic Oil?

Last oil change I switched to synthetic. In my Audi's I would change it every 5K, but the Subaru tech put a sticker on my windshield indicating to come back in 3K. Is that right? I thought with the Synthetic you could go a little bit further?

Thanks in advance all...

Lisa

Well, it really depends on what type of driving you do. Still, if you are changing your oil every 3000 miles, there is no need for synthetic (IMHO). Synthetic oil is more stable and has enough additives to allow for an extended change interval. For normal applicaitons, if you don't take advantage of this, it's like wasting $3.00+ / quart on your oil.

So my answer would probably be 5,000 miles even with a fair amount of city driving. If you mainly do highway driving, you can get away with even more. The best way to determine a good change interval is to do an oil analysis. It will allow you to safely maximize your change intervals.

On my former turbo, I changed the syn oil about every 6-7k miles. That was in Okinawa, and nothing but city driving.

In my now NA Legacy, I am running dino oil, and change it every 5kish. Even WITH city driving, I think 3k is overkill for today's oils. Everyone has their own opinion, and there are quite a few discussions/debates around this board.

But if it was me, and I was running syn oil, I'd probably go about 10k miles before I changed the oil.

Yep. I hesitated to even post because oil change intervals are largely opinion, especially when giving advice to somebody else. The best thing you can do is to get an oil analysis done for $20 and know for sure.

In the service forum someone recently posted oil analysis of mobil 1 at about 7500 miles in a WRX and it was still good.

In my cars I usually change at 4500-5500.

Thank you. 5-5,500 was what I was planning... it's just the sticker they put on my windshield indicated to come back in 3K so I thought maybe Subie's were different?? Cool, I'll wait then!

Peace all.
