Question Knock with cold start

I have a knock that starts with a cold start and fades usually after the car warms up. However, the knock continued today well after the car warmed up. Then, poof it was gone. Any ideas??

If it sounds like a dull knock it's most likely piston slap. Pretty common on subarus. The turbo EJ20 has pretty short piston skirts and the pistons sit on their sides so they are more succeptable to 'slap'. If it goes away when it's warm it's not too serious. If you make a point of complaining to your dealer or subaru rep they may give you a new short block if your car's under warranty. I've been told that it's harmless but I personally think any mechanical knock sound is not good.

try a search "cam belt tensioner". quite a few cars have had defective ones and been replaced under warranty.

most likely the sound of solid valve lifters when they are cold.
