Yup, I can tell you guys first hand that this car was fast! Even w/ the stock RS exhaust @ 5psi the clutch was slipping like mad!

Even w/ the 5Zigen and the busted engine, this car is a beast! Definately able to out-run/pull any stock RS as well as lots of other cars (I know b/c I was riding slingshot)...

For all those guys here in Canada reading this, (epecially Calgary) This is the "sleeper" RS I was telling you guys about... when it awakens (very soon) those guys w/ Minnam Stage 2's better run and hide!

BTW, I think it was b/c HOK was running synthetic as well as LOTS of LUCK for the engine not to crap out immediately... otherwise, normally a piece of metal any size would immediately cause an engine to sieze immediately.

Wait, so how many motors did you blow up? One or two? I can see from the pics the motor has top feed injectors, so it has to be a Phase II Sohc. Did you post this a long time ago?

MattC - Only 1 Phase 2 SOHC engine was hurt in the making of this monstar project... sounds like one of those "Mike's Hard Lemonade" lines doesn't it?

Yeah, the engine that went "boom" was the EJ25, which miraciously ran for ~1 yr (and was still running, mind you with less power and fuel efficiency)... HOK is in the process of getting the new EJ22T installed.

Hey now those blown pistons make for some damn good paper weights at work. Slap some rally blue paint on them and get some Subaru stickers out of a old HPI R/C car kit to put on it and you're all set. Honestly it looks like of funny and makes for a good topic of conversation. I already have a Subaru, Nissan and a Mitsu at my work.

Thatís classic detonation damage... happened to me too (7-1/2 lbs, no I/C).

For you however, at 5 lbs of boost and having an I/C, Iím surprised it happened.
Maybe itís a lean-out...
Is it possible youíre running at higher boost levels than you think?

yeah neglected... me...
but abused... the idiot ex-friend... can't find him now... took off...

Didn't seem so bad... it was spewing smoke out the back.. but stopped after a week i knew it was bad but had no idea it was like that. The dealership said they went around the block and it had good power and sounded really nice... kinda odd actually.. my heads are fine though. The dealer thinks it was a miracle...

It ran fine before only with clutch slipage... also had a broken wanter pump and gasket leak...

it ain't being neglected anymore or lent out...

Edekker: I think putting the freeflowing exhausted upped the boost or had the same effect...

MattC: Only blew up the one... and only intend too... I wanna concentrate on handling and looks now... Actually i'm pretty iffy about the transmission holding out... I think it will mush up at more than 10 psi boost in the EJ22T...

RidinLow: No i was gonna wait to pound my ex-friends face to the concrete.

That's det damage, trust me.

Although lean-outs can promote detting, lean-out damage, taken alone, would lead to melted pistons that look differently than what the pic shows.

Det damage is more like shock damage. In our cars - our pistons pe se, the piston crown around the rings are the weak. Throw in some high combustions temps, high pressures, and detting... BAM!

Wow, somebody's easily influenced

Bad tuning, and fuel starvation are bound to lead to detonation. No motor will take the abuse detonation will throw at it.

Are you running stock pistons and rods on that EJ22T? Even so, I doubt you'll be able to run much boost with that tiny T-28. Definitely not enough to make great use of those 450cc injectors. I recommend going with a full T3, 60 trim. Or something like it. Are you using the intercooler off of the MinnamII? BTW, what shape is the block in? Care to donate it to a good cause

So you knew something was really wrong with your engine, and your plan of attack was to spend money to turbo it instead of fix it?????

The engine blew up after running too much boost, and probably because the run on lean condition b/c of running out of gas. Hence the piston got fried!

Exclamation My Blown up Subaru Piston (LONG and PICTS!!You won't beleive this)

Well coming back to the board after 2 years.... I'm usually a lurker so you don't know me... but I've been here and there around the world for my biz... but here are my subaru pictures...

I blew up my subaru on oct 31 1999 (Halloween) (I felt just like a fiend... my mind was playing tricks on me)

What happened was that i lent my car to my friend and he said this happend ("I ran out of fuel on QE in Toronto and was going 80 so I decide to coast to a nearby gas station... (please don't ask questions in regards to this screwed up person). So I figure that the engine was still running, so there must be some fuel in there...so I press on the gas and I hear a CLANK CLANK CLANK and the car shakes. "

So.. i call him after an hour trying to find him and he says he's at this gas station... I get there and the car is SHAKING like a mad COW!!.

I tow it back (on flatbed of cuz) and then i take out the plugs...the front driver (piston 1? dun remember) had its electrode rammed together... the rear driver spark had oil all over it...)
I replaced the plugs with new ones and the car stopped shaking and i drove fine but there was alot less power with a clunk clunk sound on the driver side... I went to a subaru dealership and the compression tests were front driver (94) rear driver (124) front passenger (189) and rear passenger (194).
They said it would cost 5000 cdn at least to fix... (new block and labour)

grrr I had an opportunity come up in Asia and i needed to leave immediately so i left for Asia and shipped my car back to my home town Calgary... I went for three months and I came back and the car still ran pretty good... with a knocking sound.. I could still beat ludes and A4 2.8s... off the line. I had no idea what was inside i just thought it was a deformed piston... So on and off I had been driving for little over a year with this piston crapped up.
Then my friend found a EJ22T block from JC Sports for me.. I have a JCS Gen 2 turbo... with a T-28 hybrid... kicks ass...and a 5 zigen firaball... 3 inch.
I was beating M3s and NSx's in Toronto... before the blow up, the clutch was slipping everywhere though. I failed to install the S-AFC i had planned before the blow up... Maybe it would have saved it... probably not though...

With some help from friends and parent (THKS MOM) I bought an EJ22T block, gauges and gauge pod, clutch master stage 3, JCS Torque CHIP 2 and 450 cc injectors... STI Engine and Tranny mounts from TRI... and Tein Suspension (I'm totally in the hole for this one but i think in the long term it is better to do it now....). Just to plug for JC Sports... What anyone has experienced, there are two facts... Their products are damn good and they won't rip you off... (CS, delivery whatever,...) I think DHL or FED Ex are just as bad with delivery and scheduling. But they are seriously good products... They helped me a lot with this repair...

But now for the Good parts... these are my pictures for the piston and block , If anyone can figure out where that piece went you get a prize hahaha here are the links.
THEY are huge but i wanted detailed pics...
